Sloppy roadwork exposes pipeline near Jeppu

Mangalore, March 12: Suresh Nair and his family members are worried that the water supply line near his house may burst and water will gush into their house at Marnamikatte. He has just removed the water and the silt that got accumulated early on Friday.

The cause of the problem is the haphazard laying of cement concrete road leaving the water supply line without any support.

This resulted in the pipe breaking and floods in Mr. Nair's house whose floor was below the road level.

“We had a nightmare when water started to accumulate around Thursday midnight,” Mr. Nair said. As the water logging increased, Mr. Nair called the Mangalore City Corporation and sought help. “It was attended around 2 a.m. when the water had accumulated to knee level (in the house),” he said. It took a long time for him to drain away the water and remove the accumulated silt, he said.

Mr. Nair said it all started three months ago when the authorities removed a portion of the road connecting the Paris Bhat compound residents with the Marnamikatta Circle.

The Paris Bhat compound residents were then connected to the road passing through Mr. Nair's house. This, Mr. Nair said, exposed the water supply line underneath the road that was removed.

On Wednesday, Mr. Nair's house was flooded when water gushed out at the farther end of the supply line. The water logging on Friday morning was because of the leakage of the water supply line near his house.

Following his complaint, Corporation Commissioner K.N. Vijayaprakash visited Mr. Nair's house on Friday. Mr. Nair said Dr. Vijayaprakash had assured him that a retaining wall would be built to support the water supply line and also prevent land slide during rainfall. Dr. Vijayaprakash did not answer calls made to him.

Mangaluru, Jul 15: A septuagenarian from Bantwal taluk died due to coronavirus infection at a hospital in the city taking the covid-19 death toll in Dakshina Kannada to 54.

The deceased was a 73-years-old and a resident of Kasaba village in Vittal, Bantwal. Recently eight members of his family were tested positive for covid-19 including his son.

He was admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru where he was tested positive for the virus. He did not respond to the treatment and breathed his last, sources said.

The final rites were carried out by a team of trained activists of Popular Front of India (PFI) at a designated graveyard. All necessary precautions were taken by the authorities concerned and police during the funeral.

Bengaluru, Feb 14: Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker Vishvesha Hegde Kageri on Friday announced continuation of ban on private TV channels from live coverage of the Budget Session being held this Month and next month.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Kageri said that the ban was imposed on the lines of practice in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in the Parliament. Private channels will not be allowed to cover live on going session instead they will be provided with clippings by the concerned Department as was done during the previous Session.

For the first time in the history the BJP government, which had come to power for the second time in the state last year after pulling down Congress-JDS coalition government, had banned live coverage of the session by private channels and despite Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa's appeal the ban was not lifted.

Bengaluru, Jul 31: The Karnataka government on Wednesday put on hold a controversial proposal to drop certain chapters, including on Islam, Christianity, Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali, from social science textbooks to reduce the 2020-21 syllabi for students in classes 1-10.

Citing the COVID-19 pandemic and the disruption caused to the academic calendar of the year, the government had earlier dropped the chapter on Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali from the Class 7 social science textbook, saying chapters on Tipu Sultan have been retained in the Class 6 and 10 textbooks.

The move did not go down well with the opposition, which saw certain ulterior motives behind the decision.

Apparently under sharp criticism, the Department of Public Instruction issued a new notification on Wednesday "on the directions of the Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar".

There is a delay in opening the schools during the academic year 2020-21 due to COVID-19 pandemic, said the latest order.

In this context, the order said, chapters were dropped to fit in 120 days of the academic year for classes 1 to 10 and the same was published in the department's website.

"However, on the directions of the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, the decision to drop certain chapters has been put on hold. A review will be done following which the deleted chapters will be uploaded in the website," the order read.

Earlier in the day, Mr Kumar had issued a statement, saying that the decision to truncate the syllabus has not been finalised yet. He also made it clear that his department would not remove chapters unnecessarily.

Former chief minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah had attacked the government on the issue.

"The government, which has failed to control the spread of coronavirus, is using it as an opportunity to push its clandestine agenda of saffronising the textbooks," Siddaramaiah tweeted.
