Sloppy roadwork exposes pipeline near Jeppu

Mangalore, March 12: Suresh Nair and his family members are worried that the water supply line near his house may burst and water will gush into their house at Marnamikatte. He has just removed the water and the silt that got accumulated early on Friday.

The cause of the problem is the haphazard laying of cement concrete road leaving the water supply line without any support.

This resulted in the pipe breaking and floods in Mr. Nair's house whose floor was below the road level.

“We had a nightmare when water started to accumulate around Thursday midnight,” Mr. Nair said. As the water logging increased, Mr. Nair called the Mangalore City Corporation and sought help. “It was attended around 2 a.m. when the water had accumulated to knee level (in the house),” he said. It took a long time for him to drain away the water and remove the accumulated silt, he said.

Mr. Nair said it all started three months ago when the authorities removed a portion of the road connecting the Paris Bhat compound residents with the Marnamikatta Circle.

The Paris Bhat compound residents were then connected to the road passing through Mr. Nair's house. This, Mr. Nair said, exposed the water supply line underneath the road that was removed.

On Wednesday, Mr. Nair's house was flooded when water gushed out at the farther end of the supply line. The water logging on Friday morning was because of the leakage of the water supply line near his house.

Following his complaint, Corporation Commissioner K.N. Vijayaprakash visited Mr. Nair's house on Friday. Mr. Nair said Dr. Vijayaprakash had assured him that a retaining wall would be built to support the water supply line and also prevent land slide during rainfall. Dr. Vijayaprakash did not answer calls made to him.

New Delhi, Feb 2: Budget 2020 announcement that insurance behemoth LIC will be listed was well received by market participants who said this will be "IPO of the decade" akin to the Saudi Aramco listing.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) will be listed as part of the government disinvestment initiative.

A "highlight of the budget is the LIC IPO, which is akin to the Saudi Aramco listing for Indian capital markets, and will be IPO of the decade," Vijay Bhushan, President, Association of National Exchanges Members of India (ANMI) said.

According to Krishna Kumar Karwa, Managing Director, Emkay Global Financial Services, the LIC IPO will be a big positive for corporate governance and transparency and will open up one more avenue for fund raising for the government over the years.

Metropolitan Stock Exchange, Interim CEO, Balu Nair said: "The LIC listing will be eagerly awaited by investors and will provide huge fillip to capital raising through the primary market." The government proposes to sell a part of its holding in LIC through an initial public offer, Sitharaman said while presenting Budget 2020-21.

"The government will sell part of LIC through its listing in the stock market which is also a positive trigger for the market," Amit Gupta, CO-Founder and CEO, TradingBells.

Jaideep Hansraj, MD and CEO of Kotak Securities said listing of LIC would help bridge a gap in the Fiscal Deficit for FY21.

Currently, the government owns the entire 100 per cent stake in LIC.

Saudi Aramco shares were listed in December last year.

Mangaluru, July 29: Justifying the transfer of Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, district in-charge minister Kota Shrinivas Poojari has accused Mangaluru MLA U T Khader of politicizing the issue. 

The IAS officer was transferred by the Karnataka government on July 28, a day after a saffron activist issued a death threat against her on social media after she warned of legal action against the miscreants who attack cattle traders.

Condemning the development, Mr Khader had tweeted that the state government has punished the deputy commissioner instead of punishing the culprit, who issued death threat.

Responding to Mr Khader’s tweet, Mr Poojari said that the transfer of the officer was on administrative ground. “It is unfortunate that Khader politicized a transfer carried out by the government on administrative ground. This is not Khader’s time to protect any accused,” tweeted Mr Poojari. 

It is worth mentioning here that Mr Khader was the district in-charge minister of Dakshina Kannada before Mr Poojari taking over the position. 

Meanwhile, police has arrested a person in connection with the death threat against the IAS officer.

Kochi, Jan 12: Golden Kayaloram, the fourth and last Maradu residential apartment was razed by controlled implosion in Kochi on Sunday afternoon as per the directions of the Supreme Court.

The building came crashing down, leaving the entire area in a cover of white smoke.

Earlier today, Jain Coral Cove, the apartment having the maximum number of housing units among the illegally built buildings, was razed down at 11:02 am.

The authorities coordinated the operations from a control room set up at the office of the Inland Waterways Authority of India.

As per municipal records, there were 122 housing units in Jain Coral Cove and 41 in Golden Kayaloram.

The prohibitory orders that were clamped in the area will remain imposed for the day. The district administration on Saturday imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

On Saturday, the 19-floor H2O Holy Faith apartment complex with 90 flats and the Alfa Serene complex with twin towers were demolished at 11 am and 11:05 am respectively.

The buildings are razed for violating the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules. The directions in this regard were passed by the Supreme Court last year.
