Training programme on “Public Health in Emergencies” for docs begins

Manipal, March 14: The second batch of the State Level Training Program on “Public Health in Emergencies” for government doctors from the districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Karwar began here on Monday.

The doctors of the first batch held on March 11 and 12 left much wiser in the preparedness for emergencies. The tsunami and earthquake in Japan provided more grist for the sessions held at the admission hall of manipal.edu building here.

The programme is jointly organised by the Department of Public Health, Manipal University, UNICEF, Department of Health & Family Welfare, Udupi and SRM University, Chennai. MV Kamath, Honorary Director, Manipal Institute of Communication inaugurated the second batch's program.

He appealed to the organisers and experts in disaster management in redefining the concept of emergency by expressing concerns over different types of disasters that took place in India time and again. Dr H Vinod Bhat, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Manipal University gave an overview of different types of disasters in India and how socio-economic and political factors influence the relief measures in his presidential address. Every day, there is some kind of emergency taking place in the form of epidemic, communicable diseases and other man-made disasters like Bhopal Gas Tragedy besides natural calamities, he said.

Karnataka reports 12 fresh COVID-19 positive cases

Bengaluru, Apr 7: With reporting of 12 positive cases of COVID-19 since last evening, including three women, the total number of confirmed cases in Karnataka increased to 175, including four deaths.

According to official sources, while three fresh cases of COVID-19 were reported from Bengaluru, two each had been reported from Bagalkot, Kalaburagi and Mandya, followed by one each at Gadag and Bengaluru Rural districts.

After a gap of over three weeks, two more fresh cases had been reported from Kalaburagi, which had reported the first death of the country.

Man arrested under Wildlife Protection Act for biting snake to death in Karnataka

Kolar, May 7: A 38-year-old man has been arrested for biting a snake and peeling off its skin at Mustur village in Kolar district of Karnataka.

Mulbagal range forest officer KN Ravikeerthi said forest officials nabbed Kumar, a construction worker, at Mustur on Wednesday and booked him under the Wildlife Protection Act. He was under the influence of alcohol.

Ravikeerthi said Kumar's offence is non-bailable and attracts a jail term of up to three years. The remains of the snake were collected and sent to a lab to ascertain its species. Forest officials said the snake Kumar bit was not a viper as was reported earlier but a rat snake.

On Tuesday, Kumar was riding back home after buying liquor when the snake ca me under his bike's wheels. He tossed the injured snake around his neck, bit it and peeled off its skin. Kumar said the snake had troubled him in the past.

Learn to live with coronavirus; no other option left now: Karnataka CM

Bengaluru, Jul 6: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday said that the "country will have to learn to live with coronavirus as there are no options".

Yediyurappa made the remark after paying tribute to Babu Jagjivan Ram, on his death anniversary, at a ceremony in Vidhana Soudha.

"We don't have any other option, we have to learn to live with this virus. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the same thing. We have increased ambulances, we have made all arrangements to fight the pandemic. It is very important to safeguard ourselves," he said.

The Chief Minister added that the state government has made many arrangements to combat the widespread illness.

According to the Union Health Ministry, there is 23,474 number of COVID-19 cases in the state and 372 people have died due to the illness.
