Mangalore Buddhists hold candle light vigil to mourn Japan quake victims

Mangalore, March 15: The members of Dakshina Kannada District Boudha Maha Sabha got together to observe a candle light vigil in front of Town Hall here on Tuesday night to mourn the deaths caused in Japan by a massive earthquakes and tsunami.

With the candles in hands over 50 Buddhist mourners including children, men and women offered 10 minutes of prayer “Namo Thassa Bhagavatho Arahatho Samma Sambuddhasa...”

Addressing the gathering, SR Laxman, President of Maha Sabha said, “In this hour of catastrophe, the only thing we can do is to express our condolences”

MP Umeshchandra, Shashidhar Jokatte, Vice President, Kanthappa Alangar, General Secretary, Devappa Bodh, Joint Secretary, MV Padmanabha, Harish Ekkar, Narayan Bodh, Bhasker Kavathar and others were present.


Japan's north-eastern coast was battered on Friday by an 8.9 magnitude quake, the largest on record in Japan, and an ensuing tsunami that washed over hundreds of kilometres of coastline, causing widespread destruction claiming more than 10000 lives and rendered over 2.15 lakh homeless.

Kasaragod, Apr 30: The Kasaragod District Collector Sajith Babu, his gun man and driver has entered in quarantine on Wednesday.

According to sources, the Collector had been asked to go on quarantine after the reports of a journalist, who interviewed him, was tested positive for the virus.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at his routine evening press conference revealed the positivity of the journalist.

Kannur, Jun 21: Customs sleuths on Sunday seized 432 grams of gold worth around Rs 20 lakh from a passenger who arrived at Kannur International Airport from Dubai in Fly Dubai flight, scheduled under Vande Bharat Mission.

Customs Assistant Commissioner E Vikas-led team seized the smuggled gold from the passenger Usman of Malappuram district and detained him, sources said.

The seized gold was kept in his inner-wear.

Mangaluru, Apr 22: City Police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha, on Wednesday, interacted with families of Covid-19 warriors of the Police Department through a special video conference to infuse confidence in them.

He spoke to the family members of the police personnel who, along with ASHA workers, are monitoring the home quarantined people and even assist them in supplying essentials and medicines.

Most of the family member of the police personnel were of North Karnataka origin and the Commissioner asked them to stay safe by staying at home and explained to them the good work done by their family members in the Police Department.
