Chowta, two others to get Tulu Academy award

Mangalore, March 19: The Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy has announced three honourary Tulu Sahitya Academy awards for the year 2010. The awardees have been chosen under three different categories namely literature-researches, folklore and drama/cinema.

Speaking to media persons, Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy President Palthadi Ramakrishna Achar said, the awards will be conferred on D K Chowta (literature), Korappolu (folklore) and Shantaram Kalladaka (drama) for their excellent performance in the respective fields. The esteemed Tulu writer D K Chowta, has written various works including 'Kariyavajjerena Kathegalu,' 'Pilipatthigadasu,' 'Patth Pajjelu' and 'Dharametthimayae' among others. 'Mitthabail Yamuna' is the most popular among his works. It has been translated into Kannada and has already been enacted on the stage in the form of drama.

Korappolu, hailing from Sullia is a storehouse of Padadana and folk stories. The lady not only sings Padadanas but also in fluent with more than 50 folk stories which she can recall at any given point of time.

While Shantharam Kalladka who has been chosen for the award under drama category has framed more than 65 dramas out of which as many as 45 dramas are in Tulu language. His dramas also hold the credit of being converted as cinemas.

Along with the honourary awards, the Academy will also confer prizes for three books under Tulu research book, novel and translation categories. The books which have been chosen for the prize are as follows: 'Tulunadavara Samaja- Tulunadavara Reethi Rivajugalu' by B Sacchidananda Hegde (research work), 'Thanne Thoduda Sonne' by Vijaya Shetty Saletthur (novel) and 'Mayeya Eradu Natakagalu' transalted by Keshava Kudla, who is basically a non-Mangalorean, informed Achar.

The awards and the prizes will be conferred on May 1 in Puttur. The award will consist of Rs 10,000 cash and a certificate, while the winners of the book will receive Rs 5,000 cash prize and a certificate each.

Inclusion in VIII schedule

Speaking about the issue of including Tulu in the VIII Schedule of the Constitution, the Academy President said there has been a disappointing response from the Centre regarding the inclusion of Tulu in VIII Schedule.

“The Academy had written separate letters to the Central Ministers from the State S M Krsihna, Veerappa Moily, Mallikarjuna Kharge and H Muniyappa. But we were disappointed to hear that the issue would not be discussed in the sessions,” he informed.

He said that the works related to publishing Tulu text books for VII Std has been completed and the books for the VIII Std would begin soon. As many as 7,800 copies of the text books were published previous year, he said.

Bengaluru, Jul 2: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru Director CS Patil said that good rainfall is expected in few districts during next five days.

The districts likely to receive rainfall include Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Kodagu. All these districts had received deficit rainfall till date from June 1.

"From June 1 to till date Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Kodagu districts received deficit rainfall. However, there is an expectation of good rainfall in these districts in next 5 days," said CS Patil.

"Coastal districts are very likely to experience light to moderate to widespread rainfall activity during the next five days," he added.

On Friday, February 7, 2020 Tulu Koota Kuwait under the leadership of Dynamic President Ramesh S Bhandary and coordination of Sports Secretary Roshan Quadras  held its annual picnic at Mishref Garden, Kuwait.  Although slight drizzling on the   previous night had caused great concern amongst committee members , yet the  windy and dusty weather did not lessen the enthusiasm and excitement of Tulu Koota Kuwait members.  Over 1000 members enjoyed the fun filled day.

MC of the occasion Mr. Manoj Shetty & Ms. Priya Devadiga welcomed the audience and Chief guests for the event Dr Jeshna Rajan- Badr Al Samaa Clinic, Dr. S.M.Hyther Ali- Chairman of TVS Hyder Group, Mr. John Simon- Group Manager for Corporate Sales and Event Marketing ,  Al Mulla Exchange, Mr Pradeep, owner of Geetherb medicine and Mr. Lokesh & Team from NH Assets.  The program kicked off with Kuwait & Indian National anthem. The guests in their address to audience, praised Tulu Koota Kuwait unwavering efforts to unite people through language, and also the solid philanthropy and charity work being carried by the association was applauded. The presidents  of different South Canara  association in Kuwait were also amongst invited dignitaries for the event, and were welcomed with flower bouquet. This was followed by the release of “ Tulu Nada Jathre flyer”.

Tulu Koota Kuwait President, Ramesh S Bhandary in his speech welcomed the dignitaries and emphasized the significance of the annual picnic gathering. He further elaborated on the innovative concept of “Tulunada Jathre ” being initiated this year, and requested fervent support and participation from all members in  this wonderful program scheduled to be held on Friday,  March 27, 2020 at Indian Central School Indoor Ground Abbasiya. 

As part of days celebration TKK’s Flag hosting  was done  by President , Ramesh Bhandary. “Go Green Global concept” by Tulu Koota members   was the highlight of the inaugural ceremony.  This act was directed by talented committee member Mr. Suresh Salian.

The act beautifully conveyed the message of sustainability, and climate change and raised awareness on how to fight it, how to live green.  The traditional inaugural of the sports event was done by breaking of coconut by Sports Secretary Mr. Roshan Quadras.  TKK First Lady Mrs Anitha Ramesh Bhandary led the sports march holding the traditional torch followed by the  Go Green Global team holding different country flags with plant pots, followed by President, committee members and Sponsors of TKK. The president officially inaugurated the Sports Event by officially lighting the Sports Lamp.

After the inauguration ceremony, the members and kids actively participated in day long sports games and activities meticulously planned out by the Sports committee  for different age groups.  Passing the parcel, Veggies collection, ball bucket, veg shopping , macroni race, hockey, kutti donne, sack race, lagori,  breaking the pot , tyre race, slow cycling, water ballon race, musical chair , kabbadi, volley ball, throw  ball , tug of war, housie housie, kept the members and their families  engaged and entertained. The winners for the competitions were awarded with trophies towards the end of the exciting day.

Delicious and authentic Mangalorean lunch for the event was served by Oriental Restaurant Kuwait.  Sounds and lights support for the event was provided by Anand, while the beautiful moments were captured in camera by Mr.Blen Dsouza and Mr.Rajesh Devadiga

Bengaluru, April 5: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Sunday urged the people to follow the countrywide lockdown strictly amid the rise of COVID-19 cases on Sunday, and said that he has been receiving complaints of people violating the restrictions.

"Everyone knows the damage caused by the COVID- 19 infection around the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a nationwide lockdown till April 14 for the protection of people's lives. Even in our state, Bidar, Mysore, Mangalore, Bengaluru and Kalaburagi districts have witnessed a rise in the coronavirus cases day by day," Yediyurappa said.

"The government has taken a number of precautionary measures to control the spread of coronavirus including the closure of borders for public, restrictions on publicly trafficked areas and religious places. The people of the state have to strictly follow the lockdown mandate," he added.

"I have received a lot of complaints about lockdown not being followed effectively. Please remember that the key to ending the lockdown is in your hands. Only you can break the chain by strictly adhering to the restrictions," the CM tweeted.

Earlier on Saturday, 16 people tested positive for coronavirus in Karnataka, taking the total number of cases to 144 in the state.

The total number of COVID-19 positive cases rose to 3,374 in India on Sunday, as per the data provided the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
