Fish eating reduces heart attacks'

Mangalore, March 19: Fish is healthy food. It has plenty of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs) and rich in protein balanced with essential amino acids. Fish eating reduces heart attacks and heart diseases. It has been established by research, said Dr Shivananda Murthy, Former Director of Extension, KVAFSU and Professor, College of Fisheries, Mangalore.




He was addressing the participants after inaugurating the four days training programme on “Fish and freshwater prawn farming” at Bellare (Dr B R Ambedkar Bhavan), Sullia taluk on 16th March, 2011. Prof Murthy said, India stands second in farmed fish production in the world and there is lot of scope for taking up culture of Indian major carps, freshwater prawn , catfish, ornamental fish and other species. Unemployed youth, school drop outs and the like can make a livelihood by taking up ornamental fish breeding and rearing. Available ponds and tanks could be fruitfully used for farming fish. By taking up of fish production not only improve farm family income, but also ensure nutritional security of the family, since part of fish produced is consumed by the family and derive health benefits, Prof Shivananda Murthy said.




Madhava Gowda, President, Bellare Grama Panchayath, Seetha, Member of Grama Panchayath, Moideen Kunhi, Progressive Farmer, were present during the occasion. Dr Anjaneyappa, Head of Extension Education Center welcomed the guests and farmers. Dr E G Jayaraj, Professor, College of Fisheries, Mangalore participated as one of the resource persons. Mallesh, Asst Professor, Extension Education Center compeered the programme. A training manual was also released on the occasion. Forty farmers attended and benefited from the programme. In addition to lectures and practicals, visit to fish ponds was also scheduled in the training programme for the benefit of participants.

Mangaluru, Apr 10: Complaints have been registered after it came to light that the conditional permission to enter the Dakshina Kannada district for non-COVID-19 patients from Kerala has been misused on two occasions.

Police said on Friday that the Patients are allowed into the district after filling an online form and getting it authorised from the medical officer from Kasargod district hospital.

On April 9, a patient had arrvived at the district hospital complaining of head ache. After preliminary check up by the physician he left in an ambulance that had arrived from Kasargod earlier carrying another patient without informing the physician.

Bengaluru, May 19: In the wake of assurance by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to look into their demands, hotels and restaurants in Karnataka today decided to continue takeaway services for three more days.

Hotels were also exempted from the total lockdown on Sundays in Karnataka - under the state guidelines issued for Lockdown 4.0.

The Karnataka Pradesh Hotel and Restaurants' Association (KPHRA) had earlier threatened to stop takeaway services over refusal to allow dine-in facility in the fourth phase of the lockdown. 

B Chandrashekar Hebbar, president of KPHRA said that the CM urged hoteliers to wait for three days, assuring that a decision will be taken. 

"We appraised the government over the mounting losses by keeping just take-away services open. Noting that social distancing and other guidelines will be followed, we urged him to allow dine-in facility," he said.

The Association will wait three more days before discontinuing parcel services, Hebbar said. 

The government also provided relaxation to hotels from the total lockdown announced in Karnataka on Sundays, he said. 

A package for hotel employees such as cooks and waiters, along the lines of those announced for farmers, cab drivers and weavers, was also sought in a petition submitted to the chief minister.

In fact the state government had expressed its willingness to open hotels under the Lockdown 4.0, subject to restrictions. However, the central guidelines do not allow dine-in services.

Mangalore, Jan 12: Thieves reportedly stole around 70,000 cash from a MESCOM ATP machine located at Chembugudde in Thokkottu, Police said here on Sunday.

Police said that the theft took place in the MESCOM sub-division office at Chembugudde. It was said that the thieves broke open the room where the MESCOM customers bill payment machine was located and stole 70,000 rupees cash from the ATP machine.

This machine had nine lakh rupees cash. The amount was reported to have been transferred at around 1500 hrs on Saturday.
