March 20, 2011
Mangalore, March 20: Working towards strengthening the relationship between people of different faiths and establishing communal harmony is the need of the hour, said Mangalore MLA UT Khader.

He was speaking at the Talent Milad Awards ceremony organised under the auspices of Talent Research Foundation, a city based philanthropic organisation at Town Hall here on Sunday.

As many as 92 achievers were conferred the awards, which a citation, a memento and cash. The organisers have shortlisted one person each from Hindu, Muslim and Christian community considering their achievements in 28 different areas. All the awards were named after prominent Muslim personalities and social workers of coastal Karnataka, who expired in the recent past.

Khader said we should strive to practically set an example for the entire society and country by upholding communal harmony, which is necessary for a multicultural society.

Entrepreneur Dayanada Pai hailed TRF for recognising the achievements of commoners. “Achievements of great personalities will easily be recognised by all, but, no one will recognise the hidden talent of common people and their achievements in their concerned fields,” he said adding that TRF, unlike other organisations, has taken a step forward to recognise the deserved people for awards.

Veteran artiste and Mannd Sobhann Gurkaar Eric Ozario said that TRF has done a commendable job by honouring those achievers, who never aspired for any award or recognition in the public. Moreover, it has practically set the best ever example for communal harmony and mutual respect between different communities, which is indeed a difficult task.
Fr John Fernandes, Professor and Head of Chair in Christian Studies at Mangalore University, activist Sumathi V Shenoy and philanthropist Abdul Khader Haji were among the awardees.

Mangaluru, Jan 5: Against the backdrop of Mangalore violence of December 19, Additional Director General of Police of Karnataka Amar Kumar Pandey visited the city and held a meeting with senior police officers.

According to senior police officials here on Sunday, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Muslim Central Committee had planned to hold a protest against CAA at Nehru Maidan while the SKSSF had called for anti-CAA protest at State Bank area.

Though both the protests had been called off, there was an apprehension of a repeat incident of December 19 violence and hence the ADGP visited the city at the behest of state government and monitored the situation here for the entire day on Saturday.

The ADGP was unhappy that despite initial inputs and the imposition of Section 144 in the city, the situation on that day escalated to a level where police had to resort to firing only in this city.
