NGOs oppose Netravati diversion

Mangalore, March 22: Karavali Mahila Jagruti Vedike, Krishikara Vedike-Karnataka, Dakshina Kannada Parisaraskthara Okkoota, Nagarika Seva Trust and Dalit Abhivruddhi Samiti of Belthagady taluk have opposed the State Government's move to divert the west-flowing Netravati to provide water to Bangalore Urban and Bangalore Rural, Tumkur, Chickballapur, Kolar and Chitradurga districts.

In a statement issued here on Monday, they said the project would affect farmers, fishermen and people of Mangalore (who depended on the river for drinking water), besides destroying evergreen forests.

It would also affect fish breeding in the sea.

The project envisaged formation of two canals at 850 metres and 925 metres above the sea level in the Western Ghats – one from Naravi Gadikallu Gudda and another from Galibidu in Madikeri. The project to form canals, one passing through the Yelaniru area and the other through the Shiradi area creating 38 artificial lakes en route, was nothing short of a misadventure, they said.

Machines and equipment used for the project would destroy the flora and fauna of the Western Ghats, already under huge pressure owing to development activities.

They sought to know why the State Government had not taken note of the Centre forming a panel of experts headed by ecological scientist Madhav Gadgil and recommendations of its own task force for protection of the ghats.

Noting that the State Government had earmarked Rs. 200 crore and Union Minister for Law M. Veerappa Moily had promised Rs. 400 crore for the project, they said this development had led to anxiety among the people.

Experts had proved that the project was unscientific, anti-environment and impractical and that there were many pragmatic alternatives, they said.

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa had announced the project in his February 24 budget speech. Minister for Higher Education V.S. Acharya on Sunday defended it saying only 10 per cent of the water flowing into the sea would be diverted, they said.

They alleged that the BJP and the Congress, which overtly opposed the project, were not against it.

They urged the Government to conduct a field visit for the legislators of parched districts to show why the project could not be undertaken. The project estimation now was Rs. 70,000 crore and it could go beyond Rs. 2 lakh crore when it was implemented.

Effective alternatives could be provided for a mere Rs. 500 crore to Rs. 1,000 crore, they said.

Bengaluru,  Apr 30: As many as 30 new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Karnataka from April 29, 5:00 pm to April 30, 5:00 pm, taking the total number of cases to 565, informed the State Health Department on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a total of 1,718 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 33,050 in the country.

A total of 630 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours, as per the latest data provided by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Newsroom, May 26: A migrant worker died of hunger while a 10-month-old boy suffering from fever and breathing difficulties died negligence in two separate incidents onboard Shramik Special trains in Uttar Pradesh.

The 46-year-old dead migrant worker’s nephew, who was accompanying him, said that the victim had not eaten anything in the last 60 hours.

Raveesh Yadav said that no food or water was provided on the train, which they had boarded from Mumbai to travel to their native place in Jaunpur district in Uttar Pradesh.

Yadav and his uncle were working as construction workers in Mumbai.

Yadav told the paper that the train had left the Lokmanya Terminal in Mumbai, at 7pm on May 20 and arrived at its final stop, Varanasi Cantonment station, at 7.30am on May 23.

“But my uncle, who was complaining of hunger and pain all over his body, fainted half an hour before we reached Varanasi Cantonment and died within a few minutes,” Raveesh was quoted as saying.

He added that he and his uncle were hungry when they boarded the train but could not find food or water to buy.

Railways’ apathy

Meanwhile, the family of 10 month old child, who died in the train, alleged that the railways did not arrange for a doctor despite their repeated pleas.

The railway doctors had been moved to Covid-19 hospitals and by the time a doctor was provided at Tundla railway station, it was too late, the report quoted the child's grandfather, Dev Lal, as saying.

Lal said that the family members had tried to speak to the GRP at many stations, including at Aligarh, where the train had halted. "But they showed no interest and said any help would be available only in Tundla,” Lal said.

Railways officials then took the kin to a quarantine centre in Tundla, as they suspected that the baby had died because of the novel coronavirus.  It was only on Monday that the incident came to light when another individual at the quarantine facility intimated journalists after the condition of the child's mother worsened.

Last November, the mother of the child, Priyanka Devi of Bihar's Notan village in West Champaran, had gone to visit her parents who reside in Noida with the baby, who was then just four months old. Her husband Pramod Kumar is a farmer, the report added.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: Cab aggregators are once again in news for the wrong reasons after an Ola cab driver misbehaved with a 34-year-old woman passenger and even threatened to kill her when she raised an alarm.

But what followed was worse. The woman, a software engineer, immediately called the Ola emergency number following which they asked her to check if the driver was drunk. She later pressed the emergency button on the Ola app but received a message asking her to dial 100. After the aggregator failed to help her, she said she was lucky to be saved by the public.

Reacting to the incident, an Ola spokesperson said, “We regret the unfortunate incident and have immediately terminated the driver-partner from the platform upon receiving the complaint.”

Shruthi G (name changed), an employee at a software company at Bagmane Tech Park in Mahadevapura, booked an Ola cab after her work in the evening of January 3. She booked pick-up stops at two locations as she had to pick her four-year-old daughter from the day-care centre, which is 2 km away from her house.

However, around 6.22 pm, when the cab reached Malleshpalya near Kids Castle, the driver did not stop the vehicle. He asked her to get down at the last drop location. She told him to stop and tried to open the doors but he locked the doors, insisting that she sit in the car. When she resisted, he held her hands and abused her; he even threatened to kill her if she raised an alarm.

The victim said she pressed the emergency button on the app twice but only got a message advising her to call the police.

When she called the Ola emergency number, the person at the other end asked about her condition and to check whether the driver was drunk. They called back after one-and-a-half hours when she was filing a complaint at the police station.

“Ola did not make any efforts to reach out to the police or do anything to track my location and help me in that situation,” she said.

The victim called 100 and the staffer at the control room asked her which area she was in. Since she was familiar with the area, Shruthi was able to give her location.

“First they told me that the area comes under Baiyappanahalli. Later, they said it comes under HAL. Finally, they figured out the location. It took 20 minutes for the police to reach the spot,” she said.

What saved Shruti was her sheer instinct and luck. Alone in the cab, she started raising an alarm. Luckily, commuters in the other vehicles next to the cab noticed her screaming for help and stopped the driver.

“If this is the kind of security Ola provides its customer, it is very questionable,” she said. “If we have to really call the police during an emergency then why they put out the number and emergency button, it’s a waste of time during that crucial situation. If they directly told us to dial 100 during an emergency, it will save time. Lakhs of commuters take Ola cabs thinking it is safe but they have no mechanism to check their drivers and track their customers in danger.”

Baiyappanahalli police said the accused Bhimashankar Malged was arrested and remanded in judicial custody following the complaint.
