Euthanasia should be called as false mercy'

Mangalore, March 24: The appeal for euthanasia for Aruna Shanbagh, a rape victim suffering for the past 37 years has put Indians in a dilemma of choosing death over life. When Aruna's case has pumped the country to take stands, Shubhada Society and Bethany Social Service Trust, Mangalore, took a step further by organising a 'Symposium on Euthanasia,' enabling the city to voice their opinions at Sahodaya Bethany Seva Kendra on Wednesday.


Speaking at the symposium, Roshni Nilaya College of Social Work Professor Rita Noronha said that euthanasia is not limited to living or dying but has several dimensions attached to it such as human, social, legal, relationship and financial. “Euthanasia is a complex subject. Humanising living and dying are the two important aspects today,” she added.

“Euthanasia means a happy death. Referring to any patient as 'vegetable' or 'cabbage' is wrong,” said Kasturba Medical College Professor Dr Prabha Adhikari in her keynote address.


Explaining the concept of euthanasia, she said that active euthanasia is not allowed in our country, where a person is put to death because he cannot bear the pain or if he asks for death.

However, passive euthanasia which involves withdrawing life support and allowing the patient to have a natural death is allowed with the permission of the family only if the patient is certified to have no hope for cure, she said. Euthanasia has been allowed in other countries but in India having this law implemented can give chance to its misuse, said Dr Prabha.

“Today we live in a non-empathetic society and people have become prone to violence. Constitution guarantees the right to life but does not allow one to end his life. Euthanasia should be called as a false mercy,” said St Raymond's High School Graduate Assistant Richard Alvares.

“We cannot claim death, only death can claim us. When life is afflicted with illness, its time to provide care,” said Fr Muller Medical College Nursing Superintendent Sr Aileen.

Mangaluru, May 5: The Dakshina Kannada district administration has denotified two containment zones, Sampya in Puttur and Thumbe in Bantwal. They were declared containment zones after one coronavirus positive case was reported from each area.

All the primary and secondary contacts of the patients have completed home quarantine period, said DC Sindhu B Rupesh.

The district administration hitherto had already denotified three other such containment zones based on a report of DHO,  after no new case was reported in the area in the last 28 days.

At present, the district has six containment zones-- Shakthinagara, Boloor, First Neuro Hospital in Mangaluru city, Uppinangady in Puttur, Kasaba and Narikombu in Bantwal taluk.

Bengaluru, Jun 24:  Karnataka on Wednesday reported 397 new coronavirus positive cases, taking the total number of positive cases to 10,118.

According to the State Health Department, with 14 more deaths today, the state's toll has reached 164. While, 6,151 people have been discharged so far.

Hundred per cent of Community Health Centres, 50 per cent of Primary Health Centres and Urban Primary Health Centres will be converted as exclusive 'fever clinics' to screen fever cases for influenza-like illness (ILI)/severe acute respiratory infections (SARI), Karnataka Health Department said.

Mangaluru, Feb 28: Sleuths of Bajpe police station have busted a counterfeit currency racket and arrested two persons on charge of printing and circulating fake currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 200.

The arrested have been identified as Dheerendra (45), a resident of Kanjilakody House in Bantwal taluk, and Sudheer Poojary (44), a resident of Adyar Volabail. Both of them said to be activists of Hindutva groups and had campaigned for BJP during last Lok Sabha polls.

Apart from counterfeit currencies, the cops have recovered a colour printer, two mobile phones and a motor bike from the accused.

According police, on February 23 the miscreants went to a petty shop owned by one Abdul Salam near Suralpady and purchased a Gillette blade costing Rs 20. They handed over Rs 200 currency note to Abdul Salam and took Rs 180 back from him.

However, the shop keeper grew suspicious about the genuineness of Rs 200 note. When he went in search of the duo, he came to know that they had purchased mustard seeds from a nearby provision store belonging to one Muhammad Arif. There too, they had handover Rs 200 fake note and got change.

The duo then took fake notes back from Abdul Salam and Muhammad Arif and escaped. The next day, Abdul Salam filed a complaint with Bajpe police station.
