UPCL: 10,000 Muslims to fast

Udupi, March 25: Nearly 10,000 Muslims from seven villages coming under the Zonal Muslim Jamaat Federation (Valaya Muslim Jamaat Okkoota) will go on a one-day fast against the alleged pollution caused by the coal-based thermal power plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) on March 28.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, president of the federation M.P. Moideenabba said that irresponsibility of UPCL had affected the environment and health of people living in the areas surrounding the thermal plant. Muslims above the age of seven living in Padubidri, Palimar, Inna, Yermal, Kannangar, Uchila and Mudrangady would go on a fast from 4 a.m. to 6.45 p.m. on March 28.

“The Government has failed to protect the people of the region. Now only god can protect the environment and the people,” he said. A public meeting would be organised at Padubidri mosque at 4 p.m. on the same day. The Muslims would offer prayers in the evening. An Iftaar would follow the mass prayers. “We hope our prayers would open the eyes of the government,” he said. Khazi of Udupi district Bekal Ibrahim Musliyar and khazi of Dakshina Kannada K. Ahmed Maulavi will participate.

Mysuru, Aug 1: A young covid-19 warrior and activist has become the latest victim of novel coronavirus in Karnataka’s Mysuru district. 

The deceased is Khaleel ur Rahman (27), who was the office manager at Farooqia College of Pharmacy. 

During Covid-19 lockdown, he was working as a volunteer and was part of Mysuru City Corporation team also which is involved in the covid related work. 

Khaleel was also part of the team formed by IAS officer P Manivannan, who led the crucial Covid-19 relief efforts across Karnataka. He was also an activist of Social Democratic Party of India.

During the lockdown, he was distributing groceries and other necessary things among poor and migrants in Mysuru. 

Recently he fell ill and admitted to a private hospital. He was suffering from breathing difficulties. He breathed his last in the hospital without responding to any treatment.

Mangaluru, May 2:  Fishermen in the coastal districts fear that the fishing season ending on May 31 every year might be rescheduled early this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement department of fisheries on sturday said fishing season is closed for 61 days every year before the arrival of the monsoon.

As per the data with the Fisheries Department, this year the number of fishes caught has set a record.

Bengaluru, Jun 17: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has directed Minorities Department officials to take steps for tabling the Karnataka Lokayukta report on alleged irregularities in wakf properties in Karnataka, during the next session of the State legislature.

Following the Anwar Manipaddi report on alleged irregularities in wakf properties, the Lokayukta conducted the probe. The Siddaramaiah government rejected both the Anwar Manipaddi report and the Lokayukta report.

The Chief Minister issued the directions to officials during a review of the department works on Tuesday, said an official press release. The Lokayukta reportedly named several Congress leaders and senior officers in the scam.

The Lokayukta conducted the probe and submitted the report containing 15 volumes to the State government during the Siddaramaiah government’s tenure.
