NMPT handles giant gas carrier

Mangalore, March 26: New Mangalore Port received a Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) - M T Maharshi Bharadwaj, with a capacity of carrying 44,000 metric tonnes of LPG on Friday.

The vessel was berthed at Berth No.12 for evacuation of LPG meant for distribution in the state. This is the highest size of LPG vessel ever handled at the Port. So far the maximum size was 33,000 tonnes which called at the Port on January 1, 2011 (M T Maharshi Vamadeva). The entire consignment has been brought from Port Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, for M/s Total Oil India, a subsidiary of TOTAL France.

New Mangalore Port continues to be the No.1 Port in handling LPG in the country. The Port has handled a record quantity of 1.87 million tonnes of LPG during 2010-11(as on date) as against 1.63 million tonnes handled in previous year with a growth of 11%, out of which 1.61 million tonnes has been handled for M/s HPCL. The entire consignment is brought for catering the LPG needs of the entire State of Karnataka, and border areas of Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu and Kerala.

P Tamilvanan, Chairman, NMPT has stated that NMPT could achieve this landmark by permitting Total Oil India to install LPG handling facilities at Berth No.12 w.e.f. 25-1-2009

DKS urges Karnataka CM to waive all property taxes in urban local bodies, rural panchayats

Bengaluru, Jul 22: Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar on Wednesday urged Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to waive all property taxes in urban local and rural panchayats for a period of one year as citizens are bearing a huge financial brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Taking to Twitter, Shivakumar wrote, "Citizens are bearing a huge financial brunt of the Corona Pandemic. It's imperative on the government to ease the financial burden on citizens. I urge CM B.S. Yediyurappa to waive all property taxes, in urban local bodies and rural panchayats, for a period of one year on humanitarian grounds."
In yet another demand, Shivakumar on Tuesday said the state government should give details of the amount it spent on migrants and labourers during the coronavirus crisis if it is transparent.

"The image of Karnataka has come to a very rotten position. We all know that Karnataka has failed in sorting out the problem. Let them (the state government) tell what has been the amount spent on the labour, migrants and food kits on the health department. We want an account (of the expenditure) if they are so transparent," Shivakumar said.

He said the state government should have approached the hospitals for treating COVID-19 patients and if any private hospital refused, a message should have been given that the government would take it over.

He also accused the state government of corruption.

Karnataka BJP urges Modi govt to ban PFI, SDPI

Bengaluru, Jan 29: The Karnataka unit of BJP has urged the Centre and the State governments to ban the Popular Front of India (PFI) and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), accusing them of harbouring terrorist tendencies.

Addressing a press meet, N Ravi Kumar, state general secretary of the party, alleged that there was a nexus between the Congress, the PFI and the SDPI.

“Recent reports have exposed the links between the PFI and the Congress,” he said, accusing Congress leader Kapil Sibal of receiving huge funds from PFI to defend their cases in the Supreme Court.

He also accused the organisations as the ones responsible for the death of 23 Hindu activists in Karnataka. Such incidents have proven that both SDPI and PFI are dubious organisations, he said.

Thermal screening of visitors to take place at government offices in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Mar 16: Stepping up measures to curb spread of coronavirus in the state, the Karnataka government would start thermal screening of visitors at various places including the vidhana soudha, high court, secretariat, and city civil courts, from Tuesday.

In view of coronavirus scare, screening of visitors has already begun at Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa's residence at Dollar's Colony in the city.

A medical team has been deployed for the purpose, sources close to the CM told PTI. Medical screening of passengers arriving at the Kempegowda International Airport here was underway. So far seven people have been tested positive in the state while one of them died due to COVID-19 in Kalaburagi.

The Department of Health and Family Welfare said the procurement of equipment such as scanners would be completed by Monday.

"The procurement of scanners, other supplies, deputation of staff nurses and trainingshall be held and completed on March 16, Monday itself on war footing basissetting aside other works," Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare department, Pankaj Kumar Pandey said in his order to district level health officers.

The KarnatakaState Drugs Logistics and Warehousing Society (KSDLWS) would procure and give the thermal scanners to the district health and family welfare officers of Bengaluru Urban, Kalaburagi, Dharwad, it said. Sufficient virus filtering N95 masks, handgloves and sanitisers would also be provided to the officers, it added.
