MCC to crack down on illegal water users

Mangalore, March 27: While severe shortage of water has hit many parts of the state with the onset of summer, water in large quantities is being wasted through leakages in Mangalore city. Also, pilferage and misuse of water have become a major concern for the MCC, which hopes to mitigate the problem by curbing illegal connections and regularising them.

According to MCC records, the actual number of consumers in the city crosses 1.2 lakh. However, the total number of water supply connections is only about 72,000. As per MCC norms, water requirement per person is 135 lires per day (MLD). Going by this, water requirement for 72,000 authorised connections should be about 50 MLD. However, as of now, 160 MLD water is being pumped to the city, which is a clear indication that water is being misused, pilfered or lost through leakages.

The requirement of water for the entire city in 2026 is pegged at 80-90 million litres per day (MLD) as per the survey conducted by the Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environment Management Project (KUDCEMP).

To check irregularities, the MCC has come forward with a new scheme of regularising all illegal water supply connections. Those who have obtained water supply connections illegally without MCC's consent can voluntarily disclose it to get a valid connection under the new scheme.

MCC commissioner K N Vijayaprakash told the TOI that a large number of commercial establishments in the City have unauthorised water supply connections. Similarly, many domestic connections in the city too are illegal. Besides this, some use the drinking water to irrigate their agriculture fields, he said, adding that all such irregularities can be rectified once the 24x7 water supply scheme was introduced.

Crisil, the consultants for 24x7 water supply scheme of the MCC, has already been asked to prepare a detailed project report. Currently, the MCC does not have a comprehensive map of the pipelines in the city. A comprehensive mapping will be done to ascertain the total water supply connections and pipeline networks in the city. Later, sensors will be fixed to the water pipelines on all junctions to identify the leakage. Mobile sensor equipment will also be purchased to identify leakage at remote places where there are no sensors, Vijayaprakash explained.

Bengaluru, Mar 15: The Karnataka government on Saturday issued a statement saying that surveillance and containment measures against the spread of coronavirus have been increased in the state.

"In the wake of coronavirus scare, 104 Arogya Sahayavani (call centre) has reserved 20 lines for receiving calls for COVID-19," read the statement.

It also read that the dedicated seating at the 104 call centre has been increased to 40 and one person form 108 call centre will be responsible for coordinating with the ambulance services.

The statement also read that the government had arranged an orientation for the medical college staff to train them to deal with coronavirus patients.

While six people from the state were reported positive of coronavirus, the Union Ministry of Health, one amongst them was a 76-year-old man from the Kalaburagi region and he died due to co-morbidity.

The state Health Department Commissioner has said that the Telangana government has been notified about the man's death as he was also admitted to a hospital there.

So far, 84 people have been infected with COVID-19 in India.

Bengaluru, Jul 1: Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar on Wednesday played down reports about confusion regarding valuation of Second Pre- University and the Secondary School Leaving Certificate exam papers.

"Creating confusion has become a habit. There was confusion before the exam, during the exam and now confusion about the valuation of the exam papers," Kumar told reporters in Ramanagara when asked about the confusion over the valuation of answer sheets.

He had gone there to inspect a few centres where the SSLC or the 10th standard exams are underway.

The minister reminded people not to speak about the abilities of the students with contempt.

"Our students have toiled hard and are enthusiastically appearing for the examination. They are eligible for the marks they will score. So we should not speak about our children with disrespect," Kumar said.

The Education Minister said he had spoken to many leaders including former chief ministers Siddaramaiah and H D Kumaraswamy on conducting the examinations.

"Kumaraswamy had insisted on postponing the examination. I personally spoke to him and apprised him about the steps taken by us. I told him that we will work with more sincerity to ensure the safety of the children," Kumar said.

The SSLC exam was scheduled to take place from March 27 but due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown, it was postponed.

While the CBSE and a few other states either decided to give marks based on the students' performance in the previous examinations such as quarterly and half-yearly exams or gave general promotion to the students, Karnataka went ahead to hold the exam.

According to Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board officials, around 8.5 lakh students have enrolled this year for the SSLC examination.

The exams are being held at 2,879 exam centres across the state.

Prior to the SSLC examination, the last exam of the Second PUC was also conducted on June 18, which was also put on hold due to the lockdown.

Bengaluru, Apr 2: About 1,500 people from Karnataka might have attended the Tablighi Jamaat event in Nizamuddin in the national capital between March 8 to 20. Of these, the State has been able to trace 800 people.
 
Of the 800 persons, 143 people have been found to be symptomatic.
 
Mr Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary (Health and Family Welfare), in a statement here on Thursday said that the Centre had sent the list of 1,500 people to the State.
 
“We cannot say if all these have attended the congregation. Some of them may have attended and some may be the contacts of those who have attended. We have been able to trace 800 from the list and samples of 143 symptomatic persons have been sent for tests."
