Mangalore, March 28: With the Supreme Court giving its nod for the export of iron ore accumulated at major ports, about 1 lakh tonnes of iron ore has already been exported to China from the New Mangalore port.

While the first consignment of around 27,000 tonnes of iron ore was sent on March 18, the second consignment of around 72,800 tonnes has been sent on March 26, thus clearing a total of 97,800 tonnes out of the total 2.3 lakh tonnes of iron ore laying in the New Mangalore port.

As of now, Sesa Goa and MEL (Mineral Enterprises Ltd) have got permission to export their accumulated cargo at the port. While the first consignment of 27,000 tonnes of iron ore cargo belonged to Sesa Goa, the second consignment of 72,800 tonnes belonged to MEL. Both the consignments have taken the ore to China.

It may be recalled here that the State government had banned the iron ore's offshore movement in July 2010 in the wake of widespread allegations of illegal mining, following which the ore was held up in the ports. However, the Supreme Court allowed the export of iron ore that has accumulated at major ports on February 11 following a writ petition.

Thousands hit

As the remaining 1.3 lakh tonnes of iron ore belongs to minor exporters, it may take some more time for export, according to sources in the port.

Meanwhile, M Shekar Poojari, the President for Association of New Mangalore Port Stevedores, said that though the Supreme Court ruling is a good news, it will not help minor exporters. Explaining the same, he said several minor exporters have little quantity of iron ore lying in the port, that is, between 1,000 to 10,000 tonnes, which is too less for export.

Stating that more than 7,000 workers and 2,300 truckers have been hit hard following the ban, rendering them jobless, he said the Port too incured a huge loss as machineries worth crores of rupees were lying idle all these months. “If there is any allegation against any particular exporter, why punish everybody?” he questioned.

Huge loss

The Port could export only 8.38 lakh metric tonne of iron ore in 2010-11, till date (Port could export only till the ban was imposed in July 2010) as against the export of 52 lakh metric tonnes in 2009-10, thus incurring a huge loss to the only major port of Karnataka. For several years, iron ore constituted a major share of the New Mangalore Port's cargo handling.

Bengaluru, Apr 30: The Karnataka government on Thursday decided to allow migrant workers, tourists, students and others stranded in different parts of the state due to the ongoing lockdown to return to their native places, a day after the Centre issued guidelines for the process.

This will be a one-time movement and the government would arrange buses for those in need but they should bear the expenses, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J C Madhuswamy said. He also said people willing to return to the state would have to undergo tests for COVID-19. The decision was taken at the state cabinet meet and it might come into effect from Friday as the Chief Secretary will have to issue an official order, he said.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken decision on movement of people and the Centre had issued a circular in this regard. Following this we have decided to permit interstate and inter-district movement," he told reporters here.

Travel expenses should be borne by those willing to return and if they want the government can provide buses from the state transport corporations. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday issued orders allowing migrant workers, tourists, students and other people stranded in different parts of the country to move to their respective destinations with certain conditions, giving a big relief to the distressed people. Decision on opening of salons and liquor shops will be taken after May 3, he said.

Madhuswamy said permission would be given for one-time movement of labourers and others who want to go from one district to other for work or any other purpose. Those operating industry or establishment and want to move from place to place for management purpose will be given passes with strict scrutiny and through checks.

Responding to a question, the minister said, "we don't know yet how many are willing to go, where they will go, if some one asks for permission, we will permit." "One family or two or three people want to go, they can use taxi. If too many people want to go, we will provide facility through transport corporation buses," he said.

Mangalore, Jan 1: Under the aegis of the Dakshina Kannada District Jatyateeya Paksha Sanghatanegala Janti Vedik, Members of Congress, Communist Party of India, CPI (M), Janata Dal (Secular) and other secular organisations will stage a dharna on January 2 here demanding a judicial inquiry into the firing on December 19.

Talking to reporters on Tuesday evening, former Bantwal MLA B Ramanath Rai said the dharna will be held before the statue of B R Ambedkar, near the Town hall, from 1000 hrs to 1600 hrs.

Mr Rai said allegations are being made that the trouble in the city on December 19 was orchestrated by certain political parties and leaders. The city police are also being accused of acting under the influence of the ruling government in invoking prohibitory orders to quell the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and later firing at the protesters that led to two deaths.
