Need to prevent custody deaths: Commissioner

Mangalore, March 29: Terming the 'custody deaths' as the most heinous of crimes, City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said that there is a need to create awareness among police to take precautionary measures to prevent such incidents.

He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop organised by the Commissionerate at his office for police officers on prevention of custody deaths and human rights violation by police on Tuesday.

Singh said that custody death is not acceptable for a civil society and it is the responsibility of the police to avoid such crimes especially during interrogations.

He also said that in case, an unexpected death occurred at the custody, there is no other option but following the procedure of law.

The Commissioner also suggested that the working style of the police should be changed and they should chalk out scientific methods for interrogation rather than physical assault.

“There are more than a thousand police stations across the state. Even if a single case of lockup death is reported from any of these stations, the name of the entire police system will get spoiled,” he pointed out.

Later speaking to media persons, Singh said that a recent lock-up death of Ganganna Sharanappa Poojari in the Nelogi Police Station of Jewargi Taluk of Gulbarga district has acted as a wakeup call for the state police.

“Although, no such incident has occurred under the limits of Commissionerate, we have arranged this workshop as a preventive measure. Constables, Head Constables, ASIs, PSIs and ACPs are participating in this work shop”, he said.

Retired SP Ibrahim and retired DySP T C M Shareef are the resource persons for the day long work shop.

Karnataka to re-open temples, mosques, churches after May 31: CM Yediyurappa

Bengaluru, May 27: Karnataka Chief Minister Yediyurappa on Wednesday said that his government will re-open temples, mosques and churches in the state after May 31.

"We are going to open temples, mosques and churches in the state after May 31, he said while speaking to media in Bengaluru.

The Chief Minister added that the "guidelines will be followed" as suggested by experts for opening the worship places.

"We have no objections to open malls and cinema halls, but we are waiting for the guidelines of the central government, Prime Minister will take decisions to allow malls and cinemas to open," he added.

Yediyurappa has said that people from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu will not be allowed in the state till May 31.

Bengaluru gym owners gear up to reopen after 5-month hiatus

Bengaluru, Jul 31: Gyms in Bengaluru carried out sanitation work on Thursday following the Centre's nod to reopen gyms from August 5, after several weeks of COVID-induced lockdowns.

"We are taking all the precautionary measures prescribed by the government and will follow the guidelines very strictly. A thermal scanner, oximeter and hand sanitizers have been placed at the entrance of the gym.

We request all other gym owners also to follow the guidelines strictly to keep their members safe and healthy," said Prasad Kumar, a gym owner in Bangalore.

He added, "The last few months have been very difficult for us gym owners and fitness instructors. We are very grateful to the government for allowing us to re-open.

We are going to be very cautious when we open. Even before this COVID-19 pandemic, we used to sanitise all the equipment before and after every use so hopefully, this won't be too difficult for us. We are getting rid of the air conditioners to allow cross ventilation and open the space a little more."

According to Chandu Gowda, an actor and frequenter of the gym, working out at home was not the same as working out in the gym with the proper equipment.

"I'm very glad that I get to come back and work out as I used to before this lockdown. For an actor, working out is extremely important, not just for my physical health but also mental health.

Doing exercises at home is never as good as exercising in a space dedicated to one purpose. I hope other members of the gym follow the rules and regulations religiously," Gowda said.

Mangaluru | Miscreants pour kerosene on 200kg beef, thrash driver after waylaying vehicle

Mangaluru, June 21: A gang of miscreants intercepted a goods auto-rickshaw which was legally transporting beef from an abattoir to market and attacked its driver in heart of the city this morning.

The attack comes exactly a week after a gang of Bajrang Dal miscreants thrashed a cattle trader at Urwa while legally transporting four buffalos to Kudroli abattoir on June 13.

Today, a person identified as Abdul Rasheed was transporting around 200 kilograms of beef from Kudroli abattoir to Kankanady market.

Meanwhile, miscreants began to chase beef laden vehicle and managed to waylay it near Highland Hospital. They thrashed Abdul Rasheed and poured kerosene on the beef besides damaging the vehicle.

The miscreants fled in their car and motorbikes after passersby began to gather.
