Workshop on 'contact lenses-essentials & advances held

Manipal, March 29: Department of Optometry, Manipal College of Allied Health Sciences organized day long workshop on the Essentials and Advances on Contact lens for Optometrists. Optometry, a recently evolved specialty in India involves Primary Eye Care, Contact Lens practice, Low Vision Aids, Vision Therapy.

Pro vice-chancellor of Manipal University, Dr H Vinod Bhat inaugurated the program and stressed on the importance of optometrists in the community.

Recollecting the instances that led to the establishment of Eye Hospital at Karkala, he gave a clarion call to the budding optometrists to spare some time besides their professional responsibilities for community service involving eye care.

Tracing the genesis of the department Dean of MCAHS Dr B Rajashekhar said that the department which started with two graduate faculty had now grown to offer Post Graduation in Optometry and has five post graduate faculty on its staff roll.

He lauded the efforts of Jyothi Thomas and Babu Naushad in positioning the department as the First Optometry department to be set up in the entire state. The department has attracted many International students from Canada, Tanzania, Nigeria, Kenya, Dubai and continues to be one of the most sought after allied health specialty, he said.

Head of the Department Jyothi Thomas briefed about the theme of the workshop. Babu Noushad, Organizing Secretary proposed the vote of thanks. Final year student Tejpal Kaur compeered the programme.

Udupi, Aug 6: Three people including police personnel entered a well and rescued an elderly woman who had accidentally fallen into Udupi on Thursday.

A police sub-inspector and two others got down into a well and rescued the elderly woman, who accidentally fell into well at near her home at Kukkikatte.

The locals immediately alerted to police and fire and rescue personal.

Udupi town police sub-inspector Sadashiva Govroji, fire and rescue staff Vinayaka and a local Auto-driver Rajesh Nayak got into the well and brought the woman out safely.

Bengaluru, Jun 23: In an attempt to avoid exploitation of patients affected with coronavirus, the Karnataka government on Tuesday announced fixing charges that could be collected from patients by the private hospitals for treatment in the State.

There are now two sets of rates for patients--those who are referred by public health facilities and those who approach private hospitals directly.

According to the notification issued by State Chief Secretary TM Vijay Bhaskar on Tuesday, 50 per cent of the total beds in private hospitals having facilities to treat Covid-19 patients shall be reserved for the treatment of patients referred by public health authorities.

This will include the high-dependency unit and ICU (intensive care unit) beds both with and without ventilators. The hospitals may utilise the remaining Covid beds for admitting Covid-19 patients privately.

Bengaluru, Jul 3: Opposition leader in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday opined that there is no other option left but to resort to 'Jail Bharo' agitation to expose the ruling BJP government's indulge in 'Corona Corruption' which runs into more than Rs 2000 crore.

Siddaramaiah said that according to a submission to the Karnataka High Court the government has submitted that it has incurred Rs 3,392 crore expenditure for Corona in the State so far. While the market price for equipment purchased will not exceed Rs 1163 crore and it clearly shows that the corruption is to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore.

Siddaramaiah speaking to a private TV channel here on Friday said the chief minister B S Yediyurappa-led State government should come out with a White Paper on the money spent for purchases made facilities provided to patients. 

According to submission to the Court, the Government has purchased 1000 Ventilators by paying Rs 120 crore, while the market price is Rs 40 crores at Rs 4 lakh for each Ventilator. Why is Rs 120 crore more paid, does it not lead to doubt the government's claim. For purchase of kits, mask, gloves etc. it amounted to Rs 1,500 crores but paid by the government was Rs 9,000 crore."
