M'lore docs perform rare heart surgery on 3-year-old baby

Mangalore,March 31: Life was bleak for three-year-old Diksha who had a history of repeated chest infections and failed to gain weight since birth.

When examined by Dr Praveen Shetty at Yenepoya Cardiac Centre, Diksha was blue in color and at 9 Kg was grossly underweight. Echocardiogram by Dr Praveen Shetty revealed a rare, complex cardiac anomaly called Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous connection (TAPVC), wherein the oxygenated pure blood instead of draining to the left side of the heart, was totally connected to the right side.

On March 16, with a team comprising of Chief Cardiac Surgeon Dr Harish R and Cardiac Anesthesiologist Dr Rakesh M G, Anesthesiologist Dr Salman Sheikh, Perfusionist Preetha V and paediatrician Dr Murali Keshav, the heart was stopped using Heart Lung Machine and the abnormally draining pulmonary veins were redirected to the left side of the heart.

Post operatively, Diksha recovered smoothly. TAPVC is a rare birth defect of the heart seen only in 4 to 6 per 1,00,000 live births and management of such a complex heart problem is very risky and is done in only the best of cardiac centers, states a press release.

Mangaluru, Jan 21: Operations at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) are normal, a day after security agencies detonated a bomb recovered from the airport in a controlled explosion, an official said on Tuesday.

"All operations are normal at Mangluru International Airport. Everything is normal," told the airport director V.V. Rao to IANS.

Rao said even on Monday, there was no interruption to the airport operations, except for that one recalled IndiGo flight to Bengaluru.

"As the explosive was isolated and taken away from the airport, there was no disturbance to flights, except one Bengaluru-bound IndiGo flight which suffered a few hours delay and took off later," said Rao.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened at the airport.

Mangluru north assistant commissioner of police Belliappa told media that the police are still on the hunt for the culprits who planted the bomb at the airport.

"We are trying to trace the culprits, we got the footage of the suspects," said Belliappa, highlighting that the police are yet to find the name, age and other details of the suspects.

At Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), the number of police personnel has been increased in a bid to tighten the security and 24 hour searching of vehicles is underway.

"We have set up two check posts on the way to the airport and randomly checking vehicles," told Devanahalli assistant commissioner of police Subramanya to media.

All Karnataka airports, including Hubballi and Belagavi, are on high alert.

Bengaluru, Mar 13: Upset over her husband’s insistence that expenses for her heart ailment be borne by her parents, a 26-year-old homemaker hanged herself at her residence in Manjunatha Nagar, near RT Nagar, on Tuesday midnight.

RT Nagar police said Lakshmi Sharma was also being harassed by her husband Dharmananda Sharma to divorce him. Dharmananda, his father Krishnakumar and mother Sharavati were arrested on Wednesday and remanded in judicial custody.

An investigating officer said Lakshmi had left a suicide note explaining the torture she underwent.

Mangaluru, Jan 13: Supporting former state chief minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy who released a "CD on the December 19 Mangaluru violence", Dakshina Kannada party unit president Mohammed Kunhi on Monday demanded a probe into the violence.

Mr Kumaraswamy, who released 35 video clips related to the violence, had demanded the suspension of the Police Commissioner and also sought a house committee to probe the incident.

Addressing media personnel here, Kunhi questioned, "If the police department did not commit any mistake why is the state government looking worried about the CDs released by Kumaraswamy?"
