Mangalore, April 3: Mangalore police have registered a case in connection with the assault on two women BPO employees reported from the Attavar area of the city after India defeated Pakistan in the semi final of the ICC World Cup cricket.

Inspector for Mangalore South Thilakchandra said the driver of the vehicle in which the BPO employees were travelling, had alleged that the women were molested that night.

“Neither of the assaulted women have come forward to lodge a complaint yet. However police have registered a case against five or six persons under Section 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (causing hurt), 324 (assault with weapons), 354 (molestation), and 427 (causing damage) read with Section 149 of the Indian Penal Code,” he said.

'Pub attack ideology'

An inebriated group celebrating India's win against Pakistan and waving saffron flags, allegedly molested and assaulted the women on Wednesday around 11 p.m. “for being out so late”.

On condition of anonymity, an eyewitness said that the women were being dropped off home after work when their car was stopped by the inebriated mob. Some of the men asked the women what they were doing out so late.

“The girls were told to get out of the car and shout Bharat mata ki jai and dance (with the men). When they refused, one of them was assaulted, resulting in a bleeding nose,” the witness said.

“The same ideology which beat women for “drinking and dancing” during the pub attack ordered these women to dance and assaulted them for refusing to do their bidding. It was as if India had won a war and everybody should celebrate it,” the witness said.According to another source, the driver managed to call his employer, who arrived at the scene in another car. The second car then dropped the two women to their houses.

However, when the driver of the first car headed towards the office of the BPO, the mob recognised the vehicle and obstructed it again near Navbharat Circle. The driver was pulled out and beaten up. When the driver's employer came to his rescue, he too was assaulted by a group of around 15 to 20 people. The pair was rescued by the police, who happened to be passing by, the source said. Both vehicles were damaged because of stone-pelting.

With an aim to provide water to stray animals in Mangaluru, an animal activist announced a project 'Jal' under which free water bowls will be distributed to the people across the city.

Tauseef Ahmed believes many animals and birds do not find source to drink water which leads to death.
"Finding clean and safe drinking water has been a major issue in a lot of places. We humans when we face some scarcity we manage by taking the water out from the well," Ahmed told ANI.

"Unfortunately, that's not the case with when it comes to animals and birds. They do not find sources for water to drink so they eventually end up drinking sewage water and they fall sick. In some cases, even that is not available and due to dehydration, they die," he added.

Under the "Jal" project, Ahmed will distribute free water bowls to the people and expects them to make equal efforts in saving the lives of the animals.

"So, this project "Jal" will be providing 100 free water bowls all over Mangaluru. We are distributing it free of cost. All you have to do is keep the bowls outside in the garden or any places where animals frequently visit. Every day, we just have to fill the bowls with water for the animals. It will help a lot of animals to survive in the harsh weather of summers," Ahmed highlighted.

"We have used cement to make the bowls which will keep the eater really cool. We are spending close to 74 rs per bowl. We have made around 100 bowls and will continue making it. We are trying to cover as many animals as we can," he said.
