Yeddyurappa visits Kukke Subrahmanya

Kukke subrahmanya, April 4: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa here on Sunday refrained from making it clear if the Government was intended to divert the Netravathi.

When presspersons asked him to specify why the Government had allocated Rs. 200 crore in the agriculture budget for 2011-12 for “making water available” from the Yettinahole canal, a tributary of the Netravathi, in the Western Ghats, the Chief Minister said that it was in the interest of the State as a whole. Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the government would ensure that no injustice was done to the coastal region.

He said that irrigation experts would be consulted before taking up the scheme.

It may be mentioned here that point No. 107 of the agriculture budget had masked Netravathi diversion issue under the headline, “National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA)”. But the explanation on the topic said: “A survey with the help of NRSA on diversion of water from the west-flowing rivers for drinking in Bangalore Urban and Rural, Tumkur, Chickballapur, Kolar and Chitradurga districts has been completed.”

It further read: “Action will be taken in phases to provide drinking water through pipelines, while ensuring that there is no damage to the environment. In the first phase, water will be made available from the Yettinahole canal. A sum of Rs. 200 crore has been provided for implementing this scheme through institutes with requisite expertise,” it said.

Speaking to presspersons here Sunday, the Chief Minister refused to elaborate further on allocating Rs. 200 crore for the scheme.

Revenue

Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the Government had collected Rs. 37,900 crore as revenue against the target of Rs. 36,218 crore in 2010-11. It mainly came from commercial taxes, excise and motor vehicle taxes. The revenue collection was up by 24 per cent, he said.

The Chief Minister claimed that the financial condition of the State was good. The revenue surplus of the State stood at Rs. 3,000 crore.

He said that the government would convene a meeting shortly on improving roads in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Bengaluru, Jun 3: Lack of awareness on rail travel norms led to a tense situation on a Karnataka train as a female passenger was forced to disembark midway after her fellow passengers raised a hue and cry on seeing her knuckle stamped, mistaking it for a quarantine stamp, an official said on Tuesday.

"Many passengers on the train with the woman raised a hue and cry on seeing her stamped and complained to the TTE. She was later disembarked at Tumkur," a South Western Railway (SWR) zone official said.

The woman was travelling from Bengaluru to Belagavi as a transit passenger. Her status as such a passenger was stamped on her knuckle.

However, after some time, her fellow passengers observed her stamped hand and misunderstood that she was violating the quarantine norms.

Without realising that she was just a transit passenger who will be quarantined on reaching her destination, they created pandemonium and complained to the travelling ticket inspector.

"Following the public pressure, she was forcibly disembarked in Tumkur station," said the official.

Incidentally, the railways allows transit passengers to travel.

The official said the TTE would not have been aware of the rules and must have yielded to the passengers' pressure.

Later, the woman was allowed to board another train and reach her destination, the official said.

Shimoga, May 10: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa was all praise for a nine-month pregnant nurse, who is still attending to work at a Covid-dedicated hospital in the state, braving all odds in the wake of novel coronavirus pandemic.

Roopa, a resident of Gajanur, works at the Sri Jayachamarajendra Taluk Hospital in Tirthahalli.

The Chief Minister called the nurse up and admired her sense of duty after he came to know that she has been turning up at the hospital despite being in the advanced stage of pregnancy.

Amidst heightened border tensions between Indian and China, senior BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's two year old tweet comparing his party with Communist Party of China started going viral. 

The tweet, dated 26 June, 2016 reads: "Communist Party of China & BJP have done numerous works in social field. This way, there is tremendous similarities between the two parties." (sic)

Twitterati dug up this tweet after over 20 Indian Army personnel, including a colonel, were killed in a clash with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh earlier this week.

Soon after Chouhan's tweet went viral, netizens took to the micro-blogging site and slammed BJP. One user said, "Interesting comment by Hindutva ITSELF to recognise how similar they are with China. No doubt. Both believe in Dragon Throne .... and brutal absolute control." Another user said, "No wonder the BJP & China both agree that PLA never crossed into Indian territory."
