Tulu does not get preference'

Mangalore, April 5: Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy president Paltady Ramakrishna Achar said parents prefer their children taking Hindi although the children were interested in learning Tulu as the third optional language in class 6.

On the other hand, some teachers told The Hindu that learning Hindi was the need of the hour.

In the competitive world, it was Hindi which would help students when they grow up and not Tulu. Hindi would help them have broader exposure and not Tulu. Mr. Achar said in many schools children opted for Sanskrit leaving Hindi.

Same teachers and parents who object to Tulu did not object to Sanskrit in place of Hindi. He said in Belthangady taluk where Vishwa Tulu Sammelana was held and Moodbidri which had emerged as a centre of cultural activities, the Department of Public Instruction had not shown interest to teach Tulu in schools. The respective Block Education Officers (BEOs) were least bothered in this regard, he alleged.

Bengaluru, Jan 11: Scholar and writer M Chidanadamurthy passed away at a private hospital here on Saturday.

He was 88 and is survived by wife, son and daughter.
He was a well-known scholar in Karnataka specialising in the history of Kannada language and ancient Karnataka.

He was also known for his campaign to conserve the monuments Hampi and to secure classical language status to Kannada Language. Murthy has also articulated that uniform civil code and an anti-conversion law must be enacted by the Government in India.

Murthy was the head of the department of Kannada Bangalore University. He was also associated with Kannada Shakti Kendra. As a historian most of Murthy's work has focused on scientific study of the Kannada Inscriptions.

He has attempted to contextualise inscriptions in their socio cultural setup. He has produced many books on the history of Kannada language and Karnataka. He has guided many research students.

Murthy was recipient of Rajayothsava, Sathiya Academy Award , Papama award and Alava’s Nudisiri award.
His mortal remains were kept at his residence for his fellow mates and relatives.

Several dignatories like B S Yediyurappa, S L Bhyrappa, S Suresh Kumar, V Somanna expressed their condolences to the veteran's death.

The final rituals will be held on Sunday with state honour.

Manglauru, July 30: There will be no congregational prayer on Eid Al-Adha at the historic Eidgah mosque in Mangluru’s lighthouse hill this year due to covid-19 pandemic. 

The decision to suspend the Eid prayers in Eidgah was taken as per the guidelines issued by the State Board of Auqaf, said Haji Y Abdullah Kunhi, president of Zeenat Baksh Central Juma Masjid and Eidgah Masjid.

However, Eid prayer will be held at Zeenat Baksh Central Juma Masjid on July 31 at 7 a.m.

Muslims in coastal Karnataka will be celebrating Eid al-Adha on July 31 whereas Muslims in other parts of Karnataka and India are celebrating the festival on August 1.

Bengaluru, Aug 6: No private hospital in Karnataka can turn away a patient without attending to him or her, irrespective of the Coronavirus status, an official has said.

"Private medical establishments shall not deny treatment and admission to any patient approaching the establishment irrespective of the fact that such patient may or may not be suffering from Covid-19," an official from the state Health and Family Welfare Department said on Wednesday.

Likewise, no private hospital can insist on a patient for a Covid-19 test report, said the official invoking the Disaster Management Act.

"The establishments also cannot insist for Covid test report," he said, directing all private hospitals to strictly abide by their responsibilities.

According to the department, it is the duty of every private hospital to provide first aid and take lifesaving steps when any patient approaches it.

"It is the duty of every private medical establishment to provide first aid and take lifesaving measures to stabilise the patient," he said.

The department also invoked statutes from Karnataka Medical Establishments Act 2017, under sections 11 and 11 (A) to drive home the message.

The directives assume significance at a time when several cases of private hospitals denying admissions and fleecing patients across the state have emerged.

"It has been noticed that some of the private hospitals are refusing treatment and admission to emergency patients, causing distress and this has resulted in complications, leading to death in certain cases," said the official.

The district authorities have been directed to take action on the erring hospitals as the department reiterated the responsibilities of private medical establishments.
