Fishing community takes break as ban comes into effect

Mangalore, June 15: The annual deep-sea fishing ban along the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi came into effect from Wednesday, June 15, forcing boat owners and the fishing community to allow themselves a break of nearly two months.

Those who visited Old Mangalore Port early on Wednesday morning witnessed a different scene as a large number of fishing trawlers and boats were docked, owing to the strict warning by Karnataka government, which has imposed a 57-day long fishing ban from June 15 to August 10 (both days inclusive).

This ban is applicable for fishing activity being taken with the help of mechanised boats, trawlers, and country boats with in-bound or out-bound engines above 10 HP.

Meanwhile, the Department of Fisheries, Government of Karnataka has urged the fishermen to obey the state's instructions with regard to fishing ban.

It has also warned that legal action will be initiated against those who violate the instructions and venture into sea for fishing during the ban period. Cases of accidents in the sea during the ban period will not be compensated.

Those who violate the instructions will not be eligible for subsidised diesel and for concession in central excise duty.

The ban on fishing activities is slapped every year in order to help the fishes to breed, and also in view of danger posed by the rough sea during the monsoon season.

New Delhi, Feb 13: Two SpiceJet pilots have been suspended today for an improper landing at Mangalore Airport which damaged three runway edge lights. The incident took place on October 31 last year when the private carrier's Boeing 737 aircraft was returning from Dubai.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) suspended the licenses of the pilots for four-and-half months from the date of the incident.

DGCA had issued a show cause notice to the Pilot in Command and the First Officer demanding explanation of the "lapses" and found their replies unsatisfactory, the aviation watchdog said in a statement.

Investigation revealed that the touchdown was improper as it deviated to the the left on the runway in turn damaging three runway edge lights.

Bengaluru, Jan 18: The searches by income-tax officials at the residence of south Indian actress Rashmika Mandanna at Virajpet in Kodagu district were concluded on Friday.

The searches, conducted since Thursday by sleuths from Bengaluru, were concluded on Friday morning, the family said.

Speaking to reporters outside the house, the actress's mother Suman said: "We all cooperated with the officials since Thursday. The officials asked some questions which we answered properly."

Rashmika, who was not at the residence when the I-T officials arrived, joined them on Thursday night, she added.

According to sources, IT officials from Bengaluru who arrived in three cars on Thursday verified documents pertaining to properties, bank accounts and investments.

Rashmika has acted in several Kannada and Telugu movies. Her recent film 'Sarileru Neekevvaru' opposite popular Telugu actor Mahesh Babu is in the theatres now.

Bengaluru, Jan 21: Controversial Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan will remain in state-syllabus textbooks in the next academic year (2020-21) too. But the government will form another committee to look at the subject afresh.

"Efforts are on to give textbooks and uniforms the day schools open next academic year. After a discussion with the CM, we decided to not make any changes in the textbooks for the upcoming academic year,"said primary and secondary education minister S Suresh Kumar.

No political angle, says minister

However, we will form a committee to look into it again,” said the minister.

Three months ago, Madikeri MLA Appachu Ranjan had written to the minister seeking removal of contents on Tipu Sultan from Karnataka state syllabus books of classes 6,7 and 10. The minister said: “Appachu Ranjan is a five-time MLA. When he sent a letter, it’s my duty to seek an opinion on it. There’s no political angle here.”
