Union govt criticized for not banning Endosulfan

June 15, 2011

Mangalore, June 15: Even though number of farmers have lost their life due to Endosulphan, the Congress led UPA government is unwilling to ban the complete use of it which clearly shows that the government is in favour of Multi National Companies and is not bothered about the health hazards caused due to use of such insecticides said Franklin Monteiro, Member, Rajya Alpasankhya Morcha.

He was addressing agitators who had gathered near DC's office to protest against the UPA government for its anti farmer policies here on Wednesday.

The protest was organized by Bharatiya Janata Party Raita Morcha, Mangalore.

Monteiro questioned the government as to why it was delaying the banning of Endosulphan whereas all the European countries have done so already.

Alleging that Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar makes a profit of Rs. 4,500 crore from what the MNCs earn, Monteiro said the minister is deliberatey delaying the ban on Endosulphan.

He also asked the ministers to come out from their air conditioned offices and visit those farmers affected by Endosulphan.

Sridhar Gowda, Anti Endosulphan activist, Belthangady, said carrying out further study to ban Endosulphan will be a foolish step, which Pawar has been citing as the reason for the delay in the ban.

Nitin Kumar, Member, Fisheries Development Nigam, Sankappa, President of Bharatiya Janata Party Raita Morcha, Mangalore, Prathap Simhanayak were present at the protest.
