Mangalore varsity begins choice based credit system

Mangalore, June 17: Mangalore University will be bringing in Choice Based Credit System for Masters Degree programme in the faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce and Education from the current academic year.

Addressing the Academic Council meet on Thursday, Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof T?C?Shivshankarmurthy said that only three year PG?course of MCA has been kept outside the bracket of this system.

“Though there was a plan to start the system from next academic year, the Government gave its nod on Wednesday following, which the meeting of heads of all the PG?colleges affiliated to the University was convened and decision was taken to introduce the system from the current academic year itself. With this, 21 colleges offering PG?courses will have the system in place,”?said the VC adding that with this new system, the students following a particular discipline will have the freedom to choose an inter-disciplinary subject, based on his/her interest.

According to the system each course in a programme shall carry certain number of credits, which normally represents the weightage of a course. In proposed programme, the credits shall be based on the number of instructional hours per week, generally one credit per hour of instruction in theory and one credit for two hours of practical or project work or internship per week. Based on this, a two year or four semester post graduate degree programme will have 22 to 26 credits per semester and a total of 100 credits per post graduate degree programme.

One choice based course of four credits shall be offered in the third semester of the programme within the faculty or across the faculty. The choice is mandatory.

The declaration of result is based on the grade point average (GPA) earned towards the end of each semester and the cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) earned towards the end of the programme with corresponding alpha-sign grade. The system has been in place in Mysore University from 2008. Apart this, Kuvempu University too has the system.

Results

Expressing his happiness over the successful and on time declaration of results, the VC?said that the BA, BSc and BEd results were announced on June 15, while LLB, BSW and BCA?results were out on Thursday. On Friday, B.Com (all semester) results will be out followed by BBM final year results on June 20. “With the results being announced on time, the University re-opened the degree courses on June 13 this year, which is otherwise started much later,”?said the VC.

Vacancies

The VC?said that there are 70 vacant posts in the university for teaching staff and on the permission from the Government recruitment will be done as per new guidelines of UGC. Likewise, there is vacancy for 45 non teaching staff as well. The non teaching staff posts will be outsoruced, he said.

A college faculty urged the University to permit additional intake of students for BBM and B.Com courses, considering the demand. Responding to the same, the VC?said that the colleges can admit 10 per cent more than the stipulated intake but for more than 10 per cent the university will send a committee to ascertain the infrastructure and teaching capacities in the colleges. The colleges should not go ahead with admitting additional students till then.

New courses

Mangalore University will start a new course in Tourism and travel management in BA course and Diploma course in Animation and Visual affects in F?M?Cariappa College, Madikeri.

It will also start MSc Chemistry in University College, said the VC. The Council also approved opening of PG?Department of studies and Research in Hindi at the University.

Bantwal, Karnataka, May 29: Vitla Police have registered a case against four persons, including a Bajrang Dal leader, on charges of assaulting a boy and forcing him to chant 'Jai Shree Ram', video of which had gone viral on social media.

Police said on Friday that the accused have been identified as Bajrang Dal leader Dinesh, a resident of Kanyana, and two 16-year-old youngsters from Kolnadu village and a 17-year-old boy from Kanyana village. The victim of the assault has been identified as the first PUC student of Kudtumugaru.

On April 21, at around 11 am, four accused waylaid the boy's bike and started abusing him. They then dragged the boy to Kadumath High School grounds and assaulted and posed life threat. Besides, they forced him to chant ''Jai Shree Ram,'' he stated in the complaint.

Bengaluru, Aug 6: No private hospital in Karnataka can turn away a patient without attending to him or her, irrespective of the Coronavirus status, an official has said.

"Private medical establishments shall not deny treatment and admission to any patient approaching the establishment irrespective of the fact that such patient may or may not be suffering from Covid-19," an official from the state Health and Family Welfare Department said on Wednesday.

Likewise, no private hospital can insist on a patient for a Covid-19 test report, said the official invoking the Disaster Management Act.

"The establishments also cannot insist for Covid test report," he said, directing all private hospitals to strictly abide by their responsibilities.

According to the department, it is the duty of every private hospital to provide first aid and take lifesaving steps when any patient approaches it.

"It is the duty of every private medical establishment to provide first aid and take lifesaving measures to stabilise the patient," he said.

The department also invoked statutes from Karnataka Medical Establishments Act 2017, under sections 11 and 11 (A) to drive home the message.

The directives assume significance at a time when several cases of private hospitals denying admissions and fleecing patients across the state have emerged.

"It has been noticed that some of the private hospitals are refusing treatment and admission to emergency patients, causing distress and this has resulted in complications, leading to death in certain cases," said the official.

The district authorities have been directed to take action on the erring hospitals as the department reiterated the responsibilities of private medical establishments.

New Delhi, Jun 9: Elections to seven seats of the Karnataka Legislative Council will be held on June 29, the poll panel announced on Tuesday.

The seven seats are falling vacant on June 30, according to an Election Commission statement.

Members of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly will vote on June 29 to elect the seven new MLCs.

The Commission has directed the Karnataka chief secretary to depute a senior officer to ensure that the  instructions regarding COVID-19 containment measures are complied with during the elections.

The counting of votes will be held on the evening of June 29 after completion of polls, as per practice.

The notification for the elections will be issued on June 11, the statement said.

MLCs are usually elected by four types of electors -- MLAs, Graduates, Teachers and members of local authorities.

On Monday, the Commission had deferred elections to four seats of the Karnataka Legislative Council -- two each from Teachers and Graduate constituencies -- falling vacant on June 30 due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

"If MLAs are electors, the size of the electorate is small and the assembly building is the only polling station. When the electorate is teachers or graduates, the number of those who can vote is higher.

Due to the virus, Commission only allowed polls to seats where MLAs are the electors to prevent large gatherings," explained a senior EC functionary.
