Udupi, June 20: In yet another case of reckless evaluation, an SSLC?student from Brahmavar in Udupi district has been denied marks for ''change'' in her handwriting in the 23-page answer scripts.

Sandhya G S, a student of Kota Viveka Girls High School was shocked when she got low marks in Kannada. She had secured 96 in Social Science, 93 in Mathematics, 82 in Social Studies, 90 in Hindi and 79 in English. But, she was flabbergasted when she got just 66 out of 125 in Kannada, while she expected more than 120.

She applied for a photocopy of the answer script on May 16, which was sent after delaying for a month, on June 18, after the parents sent a reminder to the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board.

Sandhya was surprised to find that she had actually got 123 marks in?Kannada. The number was erased and rewritten as 66, docking an astronomical 56 marks!

When she flipped pages, she found that from page 9 to 23, the answers were evaluated but marks were cut for changing handwriting. On top of every page, a remark was made stating: 'No marks were given for change in handwriting'.

“There is a rule that the student has to take signature of invigilator while using the pen with different ink. But, here she could not maintain her handwriting in all the 23 pages. Even the evaluator doesn't seem to know Kannada well as the remarks indicated,” said her parents, Surekha and Kota Shivananada, an Yakshagana artiste.

Even in the valuator's remarks on all the pages, the syntax was wrong. Worse, the valuator's handwriting changed from page to page, a ground on which Sandhya was penalised, they said. They questioned the rationale of expecting the student to maintain the same style of writing throughout the answer script, and deducting marks if there was change. Now studying in Kota Viveka PU College, Sandhya has applied for revaluation

Bengaluru, Jan 10: The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST), which met with officials of the Social Welfare Department Thursday, has urged the state government to increase the reservation provided to the ST community.

The Commission's suggestion comes even as a committee headed by Justice Nagamohan Das is currently studying a demand for increase of reservation for the community from the existing 3% to 7.5%.

Addressing mediapersons on Thursday, Commission Chairperson Nand Kumar Sai, said the Commission had discussed the issue with the Social Welfare Department, Karnataka, asking officials to expedite the process.

In response to this suggestion, Social Welfare Department Principal Secretary G Kumar Naik said the government would take a call based on the Nagamohan Das Committee's report.

A meeting was held between members of the National ST Commission and the Social Welfare Department Thursday with regard to various projects taken up by the department.

In June last year, the then Kumaraswamy-led coalition government constituted the Justice Nagamohan Das Committee, after protests from members of the Valmiki community for an increase in reservation to 7.5%. At present, Karnataka provides 15% reservation for SCs, 3% for STs and 32% for other backward classes (OBC).

The national commission also urged the state government to ensure permanent faculty in all the 824 residential institutions run by the department. At present, as much as 50% of the faculty in these institutions have been hired on a contractual basis. "We have assured that the recruitment will be done in a short time," Naik told mediapersons.

Mangaluru, Jan 31: Mahesh Vikram Hegde, the co-founder of website 'Postcard News', known for spreading fake news on behalf of Sangh Parivar, was taken aback when he was asked to sing 'Vande Mataram' to prove his patriotism by a group of women activists at Mangaluru International Airport.

The video of the incident which occurred on Friday, days after editor-in-chief and co-founder of Republic TV Arnab Goswami was heckled by comedian Kunal Kamra on a flight, went viral on social media within hours.

Hegde was spotted by social activist Kavitha Reddy, and other young orators – Najma Nazeer and Amulya Leona – at the airport where he was waiting to board a plane to Bengaluru.

In a video, the three women are seen coercing Hegde to sing 'Vande Mataram' and prove his patriotism. In another video being circulated, the women are heard telling the journalist that he is getting an opportunity to become a 'hero' from 'zero' if he sings 'Vande Mataram.' However, he refused to open his mouth.

Reddy is seen asking Hegde whether he knew the time when Nathuram Godse assassinated Mahatma Gandhi.

Hegde was arrested in 2018 for posting a fake news aimed at creating communal conflict.
