Six kidnappers produced in court; woman complains of rape

June 22, 2011
Mangalore, June 22: The six persons, arrested in connection with kidnap case of BPO employee Philomena Serrao, were produced before a district here on Wednesday.

An employee at Mphasis, Philomena was kidnapped on Monday while she was on her way to office in a vehicle engaged by the BPO. Within 24 hours of the incident, the Mangalore city police not only rescued her safely but also arrested six persons on Tuesday, after raiding a house at Arla in Konalu village near Nellyadi.

City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh on Wednesday officially revealed the names of all six persons who were arrested during Tuesday's raid. They are Philomena's estranged husband Kiran Johnson Pereira and his associates Vasanth Kumar, Dharmaprakash, Sathish alias Putta, Mohandas and Yogish.

Mr Singh said the main intention of the crime seems that Kiran wanted his wife back. However, he said the other aspects of the crime will also be investigated.

The typical filmy style kidnap was purely pre-planned, he said adding that further investigation would reveal the hands of other persons who indirectly involved in the case by helping the accused providing hideouts, food, mobile phone vehicle etc.

He said during the interrogation Kiran was found to be psychopathic and mentally unstable.

In the backdrop of this kidnap, Mr Singh said, notices will be issued to companies as well as transport agencies to find ways to enhance safety and security for women employees, particularly those working on night shifts.

Mangalore rural police have registered a case under sections 342, 365, 368, 506 and IPC 34.

Rape and torture:

Meanwhile, Philomena accused Kiran of raping her on the night she was kidnapped. “He tortured me physically and mentally and tied my both feet with ropes and raped me,” she said adding that he also threatened to kill her and her entire family.
