Mangalore, June 28: In a heartrending tragedy, a woman and her daughter were brutally murdered in broad day light on Tuesday at their home in Panjinamogeru near Kavoor on the outskirts of the city.

Police identified the deceased as 35 year old woman Raziya and her eight year old daughter Fathima Zuha, a Class III student at Victoria English Medium School in Lady Hill.

Local sources said that unknown assailants, who came on a motor bike at around 12:30 pm, stabbed the mother and daughter and fled the scene.

Although the critically wounded duo was rushed to AJ Hospital, they succumbed to injuries without responding to treatment.

“No one was at their home, except the ill-fated duo when the incident took place,” said one of the neighbours, adding that the school going Fathima Zuha stayed at home due to heavy fever.

Zuha's two brothers Ziad, a class VII student, had been to school, he said. However, Zuha's youngest brother Zhaid (1) was found crying, when police entered the house.

Zuha's father Hameed, a scrap dealer, had left the house only an hour before the incident took place.

Senior police officers including Commissioner of Police Seemanth Kumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mutturraya and Valentine D'Souza visited the spot.

Canine squad and finger-print experts were pressed into service. The dogs sniffed and ascended up to 150 metre of hill near the house.

Kavoor police has registered a case. A team has been constituted to investigate the crime.
