Central team 'assesses' 2 GPs in DK in half day

Mangalore, June 30: Central team 'assesses' 2 Grama panchayants in DK in half day Standing Committee of the Ministry for Rural Development headed by senior BJP leader Sumithra Mahajan visited Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday to assess the implementation of various centre funded projects, to understand problems in implementation, gather suggestions with regard to improving the implementation process and make necessary recommendations to centre.

The team is on a two-day tour to Dakshina Kannada district and Udupi, which are the only two districts that the team will visit in Karnataka. The team will from here proceed to Kerala.

The team's tour in the district seemed more of a pilgrimage than an official visit. The team landed at Dharmasthala on Tuesday evening, sought blessings of Lord Manjunatha and also looked into the functioning of SKDRDP. On Wednesday morning, the team was spotted at Kudroli Gokarnatha temple and in the evening the team was to visit Kateel teample.

Making time, in between all this pilgrimage, they visited two Gram Panchayats out of 203 GPs of the district to 'assess' implementation of schemes.

The team visited Kinnigoli and Ganjimatt, after 2.30 pm on Wednesday. On Thursday, the group will visit Sanoor and Muniyal in Udupi district.

However, addressing the reporters on Wednesday at BJP office, Mahajan did not come out clear on the criterion on which the two places in the district were selected for the tour as there were many other Panchayats which had done exceptionally well and many Panchayats which have failed considerably in implementing many schemes.

When asked about her opinion on the implementation of NREGS in the State, she said that she cannot make any comment on the same as it needs to be confidential.

Now the credible question is that what an 11 member team can get to know about any Panchayat in half day visit?

During the press meet, Mahajan coming down heavily upon the Congress led UPA Government, said that whether the Congress has pair of buffaloes as its symbol or the cow and calf, one thing Congress invariably did was hiking the prices of necessary commodities.


“Corruption has reached its peak. Congress does not have majority. Hence, it is busy luring Mulayam, Maya and Jaya,” she said adding that Congress gave new dimension and magnitude to corruption in the country.

Bengaluru, Jul 27: Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said that when COVID-19 has made life and livelihoods difficult, it is unfortunate that charges have been levelled of irregularities in the procurement of COVID-19 equipment.

"The Congress which has levelled charges against the ruling BJP has not so far filed a complaint with any investigating agency. Instead, the Congress has limited itself to getting publicity. On the other hand, the ruling BJP instead of coming clean by ordering a probe into the main charges is indirectly admitting the scam," Kumaraswamy said on Sunday.

"By washing dirty linen in public, both the Congress and the BJP are playing a cruel joke on people instead of protecting their lives," he said.

Hitting out at the BJP, he asked, "Why is it that the BJP is not ordering an investigation into the Rs 2,000 crore Covid 19 corruption charges levelled against the government by the Congress? Why is the government keeping quiet on the corruption charges?"

He said, "Is this the leadership provided by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa? There could be political pressure on seeking resignation of his Ministers. But why has no action been initiated against any officers? Is there any effort to destroy the evidence by retaining officers in their existing postings?"

"Hunger for publicity is evident when we look at the press conference by five Ministers at a time," he said.

The government has countered the charges of the Congress but backtracked on ordering an investigation, he said.

"Would this not give rise to suspicion that the government is involved in the scam?" he asked.

He also asked why Congress leaders have not filed a complaint before any investigating agency despite "possessing documents to prove the charges".

"Are the Congress leaders trying to get publicity or are they concerned about the welfare of the people? The Congress Legislative Party leader is seeking an account (Lekka Kodi) while the BJP president is seeking answers (Uttara Kodi). Is it enough to give such questions and answers?"

Is there a concrete legal plan to deal with the irregularities? he asked.

"Looking at the way the Congress leaders have addressed media conferences and taken to social media campaigns, it appears that they are trying to get publicity," he said.

New Delhi, Mar 21: The Indian Railways has cancelled all train services on Sunday in view of the Janata Curfew called by prime minister Narendra Modi. All mail and express trains will stop services from 4 am to 10 pm on Sunday while all suburban train services will be reduced to a bare minimum.

Around 1,300 long-distance, mail express services will also stand cancelled in light of the curfew to bat Covid-19. These long distance trains will remain cancelled between 4 am to 10 pm on Sunday.

All passenger trains originating between the midnight of Saturday-Sunday will not be run till 10 pm, Sunday, a railway ministry official said.

However, the passenger train services already on run at 7 am on the day will be allowed to run to the destinations, a railway ministry circular to zonal railways issued on Friday said.

The Indian Railways operates around 9,000 passenger trains and 3,500 mail express services each day.

“We have sent a directive to all zonal railways, and they will get back with the total number of train services affected, by Saturday afternoon,” an official ET spoke with, said.

In his address to the nation on Thursday, the Prime Minister called for a ‘janta curfew’ between 7 am to 9 pm on Sunday, in a social-distancing drive amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Passengers alighting at enroute stations from trains already on run, and desirous of staying at the station, may be accommodated in the waiting rooms at railway stations, without overcrowding them, the circular said.

The ministry has advised zonal railways to arrange for hassle-free refund to passengers affected because of cancelled trains, while regulating train services on Sunday.

Meanwhile, to contain the spread of Covid-19, all the food plazas, jan aahar stalls have been advised to be shut until further notice by IRCTC.

The on-board catering services in mail express trains are to be closed until further advice, while static units supplying meals to prepaid trains in operation, will continue to function.

Mysuru, Jul 20: Police and the Bengaluru City Quarantine Squad apprehended quarantine breacher “Drone Boy” Prathap N M in Mysuru on Monday afternoon.

Police sources said that the 23-year-old youth agreed to surrender following negotiations with officers. 

“He agreed to turn himself in after realizing that he had no other alternative,” said an officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

A team of officers from the Quarantine Squad under Dr Prayag H S and police from the Talaghattapura Police Station under Inspector Ramappa Guttedar said they apprehended Prathap who was staying at a hotel in the Mandi Mohalla area at around 3 pm.

Prathap’s father accompanied the team to convince his son to surrender. Police said Prathap will be returned to the city to be placed into 14 days of institutional quarantine. 

With two cell phones at his disposal Prathap, who is accused of twice breaching home quarantine regulations, fled the city on Saturday. 

Police, who were initially aware of only one cell phone, lost track of the youth as he drove out of the city, turning his phone off near Kengeri.

However, after quizzing the fugitive’s family, police learned that Prathap had a second phone and sim card. “His whereabouts were established on Sunday evening by tracking this second phone,” an official source said.
