Mangalore / Bangalore, July 1: The editor-in-chief of 'Kannada Prabha' Kannada news daily, Vishweshwar Bhat, is now slated to take simultaneous control of the Suvarna News 24×7 channel, as group editor.

With this Mr Bhat has become the first prominent Kannada journalist to have a foot in both the print and electronic media.

However, sources within the 'Suvarna News' has confirmed that Hameed Palya, who had assumed charge as 'current affairs' editor' of the channel nearly three months ago, would continue in his post.

The development comes when the businessman-cum-parliamentarian Rajeev Chandrasekhar achieved his complete ownership on Kannada Prabha, which was established by Ramnath Goenka.

Mr Chandrasekhar's Jupiter Media & Entertainment Ventures began the creeping acquisition of Kannada Prabha, valued at Rs 250 crore, through a “strategic business alliance” with Kannada Prabha Publications in March 2010.

The stake transfer is now complete, according to sources in the know, although neither side has issued a formal communication yet on the extent or completion of the acquisition.

The purchase of the paper means Mr Chandrasekhar now has a Kannada newspaper and a Kannada news channel in his armoury in Bangalore. No other Kannada paper or channel has cross-media ownership.

Kannada Prabha, which has occupied the landmark Express building on Queen's Road in Bangalore, is expected to move to a new premises in October which it will share with Suvarna News.

Udupi, Jun 5: Senior BJP leader and Lok Sabha member Shobha Karandlje accused members of Tablighi Jamaat of spreading Coronavirus, particularly in slums, in Bengaluru.

Speaking to newsmen here Friday night, she said that the members had intentionally spread the virus in Siddique Layout and Padarayanapura. Members had hatched a conspiracy to destroy the country. She would raise the issue with the central government.

She said that New Delhi and Maharashtra were responsible for rising Covid-19 cases in the country. Highlighting the programmes, introduced by Modi-led NDA government for the past six years, she blamed Covid-19 for the collapse of the economy. But for Covid-19 Modi government at the Centre would have been a leader in the world,” she added.

She said 13,541 people, stranded in other States and foreign countries, had returned to Udupi. “We have sufficient beds in the district to tackle the situation. But if more people decide to travel to Udupi, arranging quarantine facilities would be a huge challenge,” she added.
