City street-vendors to approach Governor

Mangalore, July 3: The representatives of street vendors in the city, who are agitating against Mangalore City Corporation's eviction drive, are all set to take the issue to Karnataka Governor H R Bhardwaj.

A delegation of leaders, including Mangalore City Footpath Vendors Association honorary secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal, JD(S) state general secretary M G Hegde and veteran Congress leader Vijayakumar Shetty is expected to meet the Governor at Rajbhavan in Bangalore on July 4 at 11 am.

The decision comes following the announcement of Mangalore Mayor Praveen Anchan that the civic body would not stop the street vendors' eviction drive with the help of 'civic tiger' at any cost.

Eviction continues

Meanwhile, civic tiger squad has continued to evict the street vendors in city bus terminus area. On Saturday a scuffle broke out between women street vendors and MCC squad outside fish market near State Bank, when the latter began their operation.

Mangaluru, Mar 4: Fifteen Iranian fishermen, arrested for illegally entering Indian waters, were shifted from Mangaluru to Central Prison Bengaluru at Parappana Agrahara recently.

 On October 21, coast guard officials intercepted two fishing vessels near Gayathri island, about 168 nautical miles off Mangaluru Coast and took into custody 15 crew members after they failed to produce necessary documents.

While one of the boats capsized after developing a technical snag, the other boat was brought to Mangalore Port.

On the basis of a written complaint lodged by Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Deputy Commandant Kuldeep Sharma, Karnataka State Coastal Security Police (KSCP) station in Mangaluru filed case against the 15 Iranian fishermen under Maritime Zone of Indian Act 1981.

Mangaluru, May 9: Dakshina Kannada District Collector Sindhu B Roopesh on Friday held a meeting to discuss the precautionary measures to be taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and the current situation in the district.

The meeting was attended by Member of Parliament and Karnakata BJP unit chief Nalin Kumar Kateel, Minister-in-charge of Dakshina Kannada Kota Srinivasa Poojary, MLA Vedavas Kamath and District Medical Officer Dr Ramachandra Bauri among others were present there.

Top officials of the police department, labour department officials and other concerned persons were also present in the meeting.

Mangaluru, Apr 30: Yet another case of covid-19 reported in the coastal city of Mangaluru today.  

The Dakshina Kannada district administration confirmed that a 58-year-old woman hailing from Boluru area in the city was tested positive for the coronavirus.

The woman was undergoing treatment in First Neuro Hospital at Padil where a woman from Bantwal (identified as P-501), who died of coronavirus had undegone treatment before being shifted to Wenclock. 

With this, total number of positive cases in Dakshina Kannada district has gone up to 22.
