Nationwide postal strike from July 5

Mangalore, July 2: All India Postal Employees Union has decided to launch a nationwide indefinite strike from July 5.

The Joint Council of Action representing the National Federation of Postal Employees (NFPE), Federation of National Postal Organisations (FNPO), All India Postal Extra Departmental Employees Union (AIPEDEU) and the National Union of Gramin Dak Sevaks (NUGDS) have called the strike protesting against the reforms planned by the centre.

NFPE secretary general M Jayakrishnan said in a statement that the Postal Board's implementation of the recommendations made by Chicago-based consultants McKinsey for optimising the mail network will in fact result in the erosion of customers of India Post.

Addressing the media persons at Udupi on Friday, Joint Council of Action of Postal Employees, Udupi Division Convenor Suresh K alleged that the government which was not ready to implement many practical and viable suggestions made by the staff earlier citing financial constraints and limitations. Now the Centre forcing the half baked recommendations made by Mickensey Company upon postal employees, he added.

He said the recommendations include closing down of as many as 9797 post offices that constitute about 35 per cent of the total post offices in urban India. This will only benefit the courier companies to walk towards profitable business. The post of 'postman' is abolished. This further deteriorates the delivery efficiency. Speed post hubs are being introduced in Karnataka.

However, the measure is a huge loss to the exchequer and irreparable damage of losing the customers, he said and added that if all these retrograde measures are implemented in the name of mail network optimization, it will ultimately ruin the postal services.

He said the demands include government should immediately drop the idea of introducing the recommendations made by Mickensey company, filling up of the MTS vacancies in RMS, HB division by existing FTCL officials.

Non-filling of all vacant posts including sufficient LRs in NBCs in the circle including Bangalore metro, where the problems are more, approval of Rule 38 mutual transfers between postman and RMS cadres as both are identical cadres. Beisdes, separate identity for RLO unit and it should not be merged with the staff strength of the circle offices, better working arrangement, the unscientific eligibility criteria to write Grade 1 and PSS Group should be cancelled, OTA and OSA should be revised and the present system administrators should be promoted to PA/SA posts, he added.

Bantwal, Jun 5: A very rare white python, which had entered a house at Kavalakatte in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada, was caught by snake catcher Snake Kiran on Friday handed over to the authorities of Pilikula Nisargadhama.

This extremely rare white coloured python known as Albino was seen in the house of one Naushad.

The occupants of the house as well as residents of the area were panicky over seeing it. 

Later a friend of Naushad informed Snake Kiran who caught it and handed over to the care of Pilikula as per the advice of forest officer Sridhar.

More than 500 flights are expected to be operated in the fourth phase of Vande Bharat Mission, the “paid evacuation” mission of the government of India during covid-19 crisis.

This includes both Air India and private carriers who are ramping up their operations in a big way. 

Air India will be operating 170 flights till 15th of July to and from 17 countries, including Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Canada, Germany, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Philippines.

Private airlines such as IndiGo and GoAir will have significant participation in the fourth phase of Vande Bharat Mission. 

The Civil Aviation Ministry said that among others, Indigo will operate 238 flights from Qatar and 219 flights from Kuwait. GoAir will operate 41 flights from Kuwait. Phase Four will particularly focus on countries where there still are a large number of Indians who have registered to return.

Meanwhile, a record five lakh stranded Indians have returned safely to India under the Mission till now. The operations commenced on 7th May and in less than two months, nearly five lakh four thousand stranded Indians from 137 countries have returned to their homes.

In the wake of Saudi Arabia's assurance that Masjid al-Haram of Makkah and Masjid an-Nabawi of Madinah will be opened for believers after some days, a message has gone viral on social media claiming that both the holy mosques will open on Ramadan 8 (May 1).

The message which was widely circulated on Facebook and WhatsApp, also contained certain condition such as people should fetch their own prayer mats and that they should not use the washrooms in the mosques. 

Clarification

Meanwhile, the authorities of the two holy mosques, issued a clarification that the claims made in the viral post are false and baseless.

"The message being circulated about the opening date for Haramiain (two holy mosques) for public is completely baseless and false. The suspension of prayers for general public is still in effect," they said in a social media post.
