Interstate Dalits cannot enjoy SC privileges'

Mangalore, July 3: People belonging to Scheduled Castes who migrate to another state cannot claim privilege under SC Status in the migrated state, clarified Sarvotham Pai, Superintendent of Police, Civil Rights Enforcement Cell.

He was addressing monthly SC/ST grievance meeting held by the district police at SP office here on Sunday.

Mr Pai said many Tamilians have settled in Sullia taluk of the Dakshina Kannada and enjoying the benefits of various schemes based on SC status their community enjoyed in Tamil Nadu. Some of these people are also serving in police department for more than 18 years.

He said Civil Rights Enforcement Cell has served notifications to Deputy Directors of Public Instruction in four districts of Karnataka to take stringent action against those schools which take fees from SC/ST students. The Cell has also written to Director of Medical Education and Principal of Medical Education regarding Kasturba Medical College which charged Rs 75,000 fees for a Dalit student.

Devappa Hydangoor of Sullia urged the police officers to arrest Markanja Gram Panchayat President, Secretary and a Staff who allegedly involved in the financial irregularities of Rs. 42 lakh between 2005 and 2010. Since 75% of beneficiaries are Dalits, Dalit organisations will take out a massive protest, he said and urged the police authorities to arrest the accused before August 15.

Saraswathi from Sullia alleged various departments including Revenue and Social welfare department in Sullia taluk of not cooperating in issuing caste certificates to Dalit.

She said after the establishment of 'Nemmadi Kendra', the officers delaying in issuing the income and caste certificates unnecessarily.

An activist from Belthangady alleged that Government Higher Primary School, Bangady in Belthangady taluk had received Rs 250 from Dalit student. He also alleged that the bicycles given by the government were stored in a private godown illegally.

Shivappa Renkedaguthu, President of Dr B R Ambedkar Pratishtana urged to investigate the murder case of Shivappa Bangera, a Dalit leader and a non-teaching staff in Mangalore University, who was killed in 2003 near his house in Bantwal taluk under mysterious circumstances.

Puttur ASP Rohini Katoch, Additional SP Prabhakar were present.

Bengaluru gym owners gear up to reopen after 5-month hiatus

Bengaluru, Jul 31: Gyms in Bengaluru carried out sanitation work on Thursday following the Centre's nod to reopen gyms from August 5, after several weeks of COVID-induced lockdowns.

"We are taking all the precautionary measures prescribed by the government and will follow the guidelines very strictly. A thermal scanner, oximeter and hand sanitizers have been placed at the entrance of the gym.

We request all other gym owners also to follow the guidelines strictly to keep their members safe and healthy," said Prasad Kumar, a gym owner in Bangalore.

He added, "The last few months have been very difficult for us gym owners and fitness instructors. We are very grateful to the government for allowing us to re-open.

We are going to be very cautious when we open. Even before this COVID-19 pandemic, we used to sanitise all the equipment before and after every use so hopefully, this won't be too difficult for us. We are getting rid of the air conditioners to allow cross ventilation and open the space a little more."

According to Chandu Gowda, an actor and frequenter of the gym, working out at home was not the same as working out in the gym with the proper equipment.

"I'm very glad that I get to come back and work out as I used to before this lockdown. For an actor, working out is extremely important, not just for my physical health but also mental health.

Doing exercises at home is never as good as exercising in a space dedicated to one purpose. I hope other members of the gym follow the rules and regulations religiously," Gowda said.

Harekala Hajabba, the orange seller who set up school for underprivileged, chosen for Padma Shri 2020

Mangaluru, Jan 25: Orange vendor Harekala Hajabba, popularly known as 'Akshara Santha' (the saint of alphabets), who went on to build a school at Newpadpu village on the city’s outskirts in 1999 is among this year’s Padma Shri awardees.

When Hajabba received the call on being nominated for the award, he was standing in a queue to buy rations.

As he is not fluent in Hindi, Hajabba handed over the phone to an auto driver, who conveyed the news that the Padma Shri award will be conferred on him.

The unlettered achiever set up a primary school from his meagre savings of Rs 150 per day, selling oranges in Mangaluru.

“The first time I felt bad for being an illiterate was when a foreigner enquired about the price of oranges in English. I did not know what he meant. So, I decided to start a school in my village,” Hajabba had said during a felicitation programme.

When Hajabba decided to start a school, he did not get any support. He started the school with 28 children.

The school today has been upgraded to a composite high school and is catering to the educational needs of hundreds of children in and around Newpadpu.

He ran from pillar to post in the Zilla Panchayat to make his dream come true. All cash awards he had received went into building the school. The United Christians Association, moved by the sight of his dilapidated house, built a 760-square-foot house costing Rs 15 lakh for him.

Hajabba’s life was prescribed for the syllabus of three universities - Davangere, Kuvempu and Mangalore. His success story is also included in a Tulu textbook.

He won the Karnataka Rajyotsava award in 2013, Real Heroes award from TV channel CNN-IBN.

Hajabba, when contacted, said he could not believe his ears when told about the award.

New dreams

The frail vendor, in his 60s, humbly declared that he could achieve all this because of the support of all. Hajabba now dreams of upgrading the school into a full-fledged PU college.

Sindhu B Rupesh transferred; Dr Rajendra K V is new DC of Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru, July 28: In an unexpected development, the government of Karnataka has transferred Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh.

The development comes days after the IAS officer warned of legal action against those attacking cattle traders in the region.

Another IAS officer Dr Rajendra K V who was the CEO of Belagavi Zilla Panchayat, has been transferred and posted as the new Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada.

Dr Rajendra is a medical doctor graduated from Bapuji Medical College, Davangere. He had secured the 32nd rank in the civil services examination in 2013.

Sindhu B Rupesh had taken over as DK DC in September 2019. Now, she is posted as the director, electronic delivery citizen services (EDCS), DP & AR (e governance) Bengaluru.
