Street vendors plan mammoth protest on Thursday

Mangalore, July 6: To exert pressure on the MCC to stop civic tiger operation against street side and foot path vendors in the city, the Beedhi Badi Vyaparasthara Horata Samiti will be organising a mammoth protest by forming 'human chains' at various places where MCC declared 'no-vending zone' on Thursday, July 7.

Sunil Kumar Bajal, Convener of the Samiti told media persons here on Wednesday that the fight would continue until MCC stop the operation.

With the slogan “stop tiger operation, save street vendors”, the Samiti will form human chain at State Bank, Lady Goshen and surrounding areas at 3:00 pm, he said. Later, the protesters will stage a demonstration in front of Deputy Commissioner's Office.

More than 300 affected street vendors along with likeminded organisations will also stage protest in front of residence of Krishna J Palemar, District in charge Minister to pressurize the MCC to stop the eviction drive.

He said the protesters will also launch an indefinite hunger strike from July 13.

Meeting with Governor

Meanwhile, a delegation of leaders, including JD(S) state general secretary M G Hegde, Shashiraj Shetty, Yadava Shetty and veteran Congress leader Vijayakumar Shetty met the Governor HR Bharadwaj at Rajbhavan in Bangalore on July 4.

The delegation tried to convince the Governor to stop BJP led MCC's anti-people, anti-minority eviction drive, said one of the delegates.

Vasantha Achary, former Mayor Ashraf, Shashiraj Shetty and others were present at the press meet.

Mangaluru, May 12: The Karnataka government has ordered that Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts be considered as one unit for the movement of people to undertake permitted activities between 0700 hrs to and 1900 hrs.

Principal Secretary and Member Secretary, Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority, T K Anil Kumar, in an order, said that there was no need for different passes for commuting by people between these two districts.

However, people should carry their identity cards issued by their respective enterprises/ companies to show that they are carrying out permitted activities only, he said.

Bengaluru, Jan 26: BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel has been served with a court notice asking him to personally appear before the special court for people’s representatives on February 24, in connection with a defamation suit filed by Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad.

Rizwan had lodged the defamation suit against Kateel and state BJP social media chief after the party, in a tweet during the 2019 Lok Sabha election, alleged Rizwan’s involvement in the manufacture of fake voter identity cards.

Apart from Kateel, head of the party’s social media unit has also been asked to appear in person at the above court on February 24.

Mangalore, Mar 18: The Dakshina Kannada District Home Guards felicitated social activist and Executive Director of Centre for Integrated Learning, Sachitha Nandagopal at the Home Guards district office to mark the International Women's Day recently.

She was recognised for her achievements and contributions to the society in the field of education, culture and mental health.

Sachitha Nandagopal, a former Head of Department of Journalism at Besant Women's College and Principal of CMR Post Graduate Centre for Media Studies, Bangalore, is the Co-Founder of Centre for Integrated Learning, Mangalore which is an NGO working in the field of alternative education, adding value to the present education system. As a Facilitator in Dance Movement Therapy, she has founded Anveshanam - Centre for Mindfulness and Emotional Wellbeing, an organisation dedicated to addressing mental health issues.

She was honoured by District Commandant, Dakshina Kannada Home Guards, Dr. Muralimohan Chunthar. Senior Home Guard Ramesh Bhandary, Diwakar, Mahesh and lady personnel of Home Guards were present on the occasion.
