Ramesh Acharya chosen for Pathala award

Mangalore, July 7: Senior yakshagana artist M K Ramesh Acharya, who specialises in women's role in Yakshagana has been selected for “Pathala award” for the year 2011. The award is given by the Pathala Yakshakala Pratishtana, Edaneeru.

The award carries Rs 5,000 in cash and a citation.

Past recipients of the award include Kateel Purushottam Bhat, Kadaba Shantappa, Peruvodi Narayan Bhat, Kodakallu Gopalakrishna Bhat, Kudana Gopalakrishna Bhat, and Margoli Govind Serigar.

The award will be presented at a function to be held at Krishna Hall of Sri Edaneeru Math, Kasargod on July 8.

Born in Mangalanagar in Theerthahalli in 1949, he learned the art of “Thenkuthittu School” from Kuriya Vittalshasthri and studied the “Badaguthittu art” from Veerabadhra Nayak.

He has toured with the Kiga Mela, Mandathi Mela, Perdoor Mela, Saligrama Mela and Dharmasthala Mela.

He often played the role of Devayani, Thare and Kayadu opposite Sheni Gopalakrishna Bhat who played Yayathi, Vali and Hiranyakashipu.

Belgaum, May 6: A police constable engaged in security duty at the Belgaum District Collector's bungalow committed suicide by shooting himself on Wednesday morning.

The deceased was identified as Prakash Gurvannavar (32) who was a native of Ambadgatti village in Kittur taluka in the Belgaum district.

Upon receiving information about the incident, Commissioner of Police Lokesh Kumar rushed to the spot.

Further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, May 27: Karnataka’s twin coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi today reported 11 and 9 fresh covid-19 cases respectively.

In Dakshina Kannada the covid-19 patients include seven women and four men who had recently come from Maharashtra.

One of the patients is a 3-year-old child. Others are girls aged 11 and 17, women aged 36, 37, 45, 59 and men aged 22, 35, 39 and 46.

All of them have been shifted to covid-19 hospital from different institutional quarantine centres. 

In Udupi too all the nine people – six men, a boy, and two women -  had come from Maharashtra a few days ago.

Udupi, Aug 6: Three people including police personnel entered a well and rescued an elderly woman who had accidentally fallen into Udupi on Thursday.

A police sub-inspector and two others got down into a well and rescued the elderly woman, who accidentally fell into well at near her home at Kukkikatte.

The locals immediately alerted to police and fire and rescue personal.

Udupi town police sub-inspector Sadashiva Govroji, fire and rescue staff Vinayaka and a local Auto-driver Rajesh Nayak got into the well and brought the woman out safely.
