Kumaraswamy ends hunger strike; JD(S) stages road block in M'lore

Bangalore/Mangalore, July 10: JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy today ended his two-day-old indefinite fast to demand a CBI probe into ruling BJP's allegation that he and his family had amassed illegal wealth of Rs 1,500 crore, saying he was doing so bowing to the directives of his party and its workers.

Kumaraswamy was offered a glass of fruit juice by Jnanapeetha Awardee U R Ananthamurthy at Freedom Park after he urged him to withdrew the fast, which the JDS leader accepted and ended his stir.

"Personally I am in favour of continuing with the fast. But my party leaders, partymen and leading personalities have been mounting pressure on me to give up the fast. I am obliging all of them and respecting their sentiments."

Kumaraswamy criticised the 'callous manner' in which allegations were hurled against family members of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, including himself, by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and BJP.

Earlier, a three-member ministers team comprising Home Minister R Ashoka, Labour Minister B N Bacchegowda and Housing Minister V Somanna called on Kumaraswamy and handed over a letter to him from Yeddyurappa, requesting him to call off the fast.

Yeddyurappa invited Kumarawamy for parleys on the issues raised by him and ruled out seeking a CBI probe.

A team of doctors from Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, who conducted a medical check up on Kumaraswamy cautioned him against continuing the fast as his blood pressure and sugar levels fluctuated.

In view of the medical report, Devegowda convened an emergent meeting of senior party leaders at which it decided to direct Kumaraswamy to call off the fast.

Deve Gowda announced at a press conference that the party had directed Kumaraswamy to withdraw the fast.

Senior JDS leader, M C Nanaiah communicated the party's decision to Kumaraswamy and insisted that he abide by it.

Addressing the gathering, Anantha Murthy urged Kumaraswamy to end the fast and JDS supporters too voiced similar sentiments.

Kumaraswamy had launched the fast yesterday demanding that the state government seek a CBI probe into the allegations BJP released in its 53-page chargsheet two weeks ago.

Yeddyurappa in his letter had assured that the word 'chargesheet' would be dropped and the document would be labelled as 'booklet.

Meanwhile, in Mangalore JD(S) workers staged a road block near Hampankatta on Sunday morning extending support their leader H D Kumaraswamy.

Local JD(S) leader MG Hegde, Shashraj Shetty, DM Aslam and Aziz Kudroli were present among the protesters.

Air India to operate 149 repatriation flights to 31 countries from May 16 to 22

New Delhi, May 12: Air India is planning to operate 149 repatriation flights to 31 countries between May 16 and May 22 during the second phase of the Vande Bharat mission to bring back home Indians stranded abroad amid the coronavirus-triggered lockdown, officials said. During the first phase of the Vande Bharat mission, Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express are scheduled to operate total 64 flights between May 7 and May 14 to bring approximately 15,000 Indians from 12 countries on a payment basis.

"In the second phase, Air India and Air India Express will operate 149 flights to countries such as the USA, the UAE, Canada, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Malaysia, Oman, Kazakhstan, Australia, Ukraine, Qatar and Indonesia," the airline officials stated.

Other countries to where the national carrier would operate flights between May 16 and May 22 are Russia, Philippines, France, Singapore, Ireland, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait,

Japan, Georgia, Germany and Tajikistan, officials noted.
The flights during the second phase will also be operated to Bahrain, Armenia, Thailand, Italy, Nepal, Belarus, Nigeria and Bangladesh, they mentioned.

India has been under lockdown since March 25 to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, which has infected more than 70,000 people and killed around 2,290 people in the country till now. All scheduled commercial passenger flights have been suspended for the lockdown period.

20 special flights from Saudi to India announced; 3 and a half to Bengaluru; Sorry Mangaluru

Newsroom, Jun 2: The government of India has announced operation of another 20 special flights to repatriate stranded NRIs from Kingdom of Saudi Arabia under Vande Bharat Mission.

All the repatriation flights will take off from three major airports – Dammam, Riyadh and Jeddah – between June 10 and June 16. Most of the flights will land in Kerala.

The first flight from Saudi Arabia to Karnataka in the new schedule will be operated on June 11. It will take off from Jeddah with passengers from both Kerala and Karnataka. After landing in Kozhikode it will continue its journey to Bengaluru.

The next three flights – Dammam to Bengaluru on June 12, Jeddah to Bengaluru on June 13 and Riyadh to Bengaluru on June 15 – will directly fly to Karnataka.

Even though thousands of Mangalureans are stranded in Saudi Arabian cities due to lockdown, the government has not announced any flight to Mangaluru International Airport.

2 workers buried alive at construction site

Maddur, Feb 7: Two daily wage workers were buried alive after a heap of mud collapsed on them near the Agriculture Department office on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, in Maddur of Mandya district on Thursday night, police said on Friday.

Police said that the deceased, Kashinath (37), and Rajgandh (30), were working at a site of the ongoing Bengaluru-mysuru highway development project.
