Kumbla, July 11: In a major heist, the ancient Poomani Kinnimani temple in Bedraduka and a jewellery shop in Kumbla were robbed on the intervening night of Monday.

The gold ornaments of the deity, valued at several lakhs of rupees, were stolen while gold valued at 41 sovereigns were burgled from the Sharafa jewellery in the town.

Two panchaloha idols and five flowers of gold on the deity valued at lakhs of rupees were stolen from the temple.

A devotee who came to the temple in the morning noticed that the locks of the temple door were broken. He alerted the neighbours and members of the temple committee.

An attempt was made to burgle the nearby Beerannalva temple but the panchaloha idols at the temple were not stolen.

The burglars got into the temple by breaking open the door of the outer wall of the temple as well as the sanctum sanctorum.

The ancient panchaloha idols may be valued at lakhs of rupees or even crores, said members of the temple governing body.

Top level police officials and finger print experts conducted the preliminary investigation with the help of sniffer dogs.

In another incident on the same night, burglars got away with 41 sovereigns of gold from Sharafa jewellery in Kumbla town. The thieves, however, failed in their attempt to break open the locker located on the first floor.

The employees of the jewellery shop notice the theft in the morning when they came to open the shop and informed the police. The thieves broke open the locks of an adjacent shop and got into the jewellery shop by boring a large hole on the wall.

The thieves got away the 41 sovereigns of gold jewellery kept in the ground floor of the shop.
