Mangalore, July 12: Auto-rickshaw drivers belonging to various unions staged a demonstration in the city on Tuesday demanding the revision in auto fare in view of the recent hike in fuel prices.

The protesters, who took out rally pushing the rickshaws sans fuels from Hampankatta Circle to Deputy Commissioner's Office, demanded a 40% raise in the minimum auto fare with immediate effect.

U Ali Hasan, President of Coordinating Committee of Dakshina Kannada District Organizations of Auto Drivers said that when the last time the auto fare revised, the price for one litre petrol was Rs 50 and now, it is about Rs 70. Moreover, the price for LPG has also been hiked from 30 to 40 per cent. Therefore, the revision in auto fare is inevitable, he said.

He said the contribution of MCC for the poor condition of road work also affects the longevity of the auto rickshaws. Spare parts of autos, tires and garage fee also hiked in these days. “There is no way other than hiking the minimum fare,” he opined and added that District Administration should fulfill their demand immediately.

B Vishnu Moorthy, General Secretary of the Committee said that government should provide auto-rickshaw drivers 5 litre petrol and 5 litre LPG as subsidy on par with fishermen.

He also urged the government to fill the vacancies in RTO so that work will be done smoothly.

The members of DK District Auto-rickshaw Drivers Associations, Janatha Auto-rickshaw and Vehicles' Association, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Surathkal Auto-rickshaw Drivers and Owners Association, Minorities Drivers and Owners Association and others took part in the protest.

Udupi, Jun 28: The Padubidri police have booked cases against two patients of Novel Coronavirus for not revealing their primary contacts and hiding their travel history.

According to DHO Sudhirchandra Sooda, two siblings from Hejamadi in Padubidri had tested positive for COVID-19 recently. After shifting to the hospital, when the officials asked them about their primary contacts and travel history, the patients furnished false information.

When the officials collected information from various sources, they realised that the duo had travelled to Bantwal, Kasargod, Ullal and other places in Dakshina Kannada, said Dr Sooda. Hence, the district administration decided to file cases against them, he added.

Mangaluru, Jan 15: Popular Front of India leader Mohammed Saqib came down heavily on Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha for justifying the Dec 19 firing which claimed two Muslim lives in the city.

He was addressing a mammoth crowd of around two lakh people, mostly Muslims, who had gathered at Shah Garden at Adyar in Mangaluru today to register their protest against CAA, NRP, NRC, besides police atrocities on Muslims in Mangaluru.

Criticising the way the commissioner handled the situation on December 19, he said the people have all the right to agitate when their citizenship is endangered.

“Two men lost their lives. Then Commissioner started releasing misleading videos (to justify the killing),” he said questioning the top cop: “Who are you? Are you a British?”

“What kind of doctor you are? You are a doctor in creating false stories,” he said whiling taking on the top cop for claiming that protesters had tried to storm the Mangaluru North Police Station.
