Woman sets baby ablaze, commits suicide

Mangalore, July 12: A 23-year-old- married woman, allegedly killed her one-and-a-half year-old girl child by setting her ablaze and committed suicide similarly after dousing herself with kerosene on Tuesday in Bantwal taluk.

The deceased have been identified as Mamatha, wife of Jayanth Shettigar, a resident of Sangabettu village of Bantwal, and their child Khushi.

Mamatha allegedly committed the crime at around 10 a.m., when she was alone at home and Jayanth Shettigar's father Nonaiah was working outside the house.

When Nonaiah heard the screams of his daughter-in-law and her baby, he tried to enter the house, but, the door was locked from inside. Finally he entered the house by breaking the door with the help of neighbours.

Mamatha, who suffered serious burns, died on the spot. Her daughter died on her way to hospital.

Bantwal rural police visited the spot and registered a case. The reason for the suicide is yet to be known.

Mangaluru, Apr 26: City Police Commissioner P S Harsha on Sunday said that the news about the implementation of seal down in some wards of Mangaluru city is fake and urged the public not to pay any heed to it.

Taking to twitter, Mr Harsha wrote, ''Some miscreants are floating some old speculative…TV news reports of seal down in some wards of Mangaluru city. It’s fake news.....Don’t Heed to fake news.''

New Delhi, Apr 19: The government on Sunday prohibited the sale of non-essential items through e-commerce platforms during the ongoing lockdown, four days after allowing such companies to sale mobile phones, refrigerators and ready-made garments.

Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla issued an order excluding the non-essential items from sale by the e-commerce companies from the consolidated revised guidelines, which listed the exemption given to the services and people from the purview of the lockdown.

The order said the following clause -- "E-commerce companies. Vehicles used by e-commerce operators will be allowed to ply with necessary permissions" -- is excluded from the guidelines.

The previous order had said such items were allowed for sale through e-commerce platforms from April 20.

However, the reason for reversing the order is not known immediately.

Mangaluru, Jan 17: An auto-mobile shop at Deralakatte here caught fire on Friday incurring huge loss on the shopkeeper.

According to police, the incident happened in the morning when the shop owner opened the shop.

Locals suspect that miscreants might have set the shop on fire and had escaped from the scene at night.
