Double murder: Residents protest against 'harassing innocents'

Mangalore, July 12: A small group of residents of Panjimogaru led by BJP Corporator Shantha R staged a protest at Kulur junction here on Tuesday demanding stern action against police who allegedly harassed two 'innocent' Dalit teenagers in connection with the brutal murder of a woman and daughter.

Addressing the protesters Ms Shantha demanded to arrest the 'real culprit' of the murder.

She said that some people in the guise of policemen arrested Saanu and Sunil, took them to a deserted place, and urged them to admit that they had murdered the mother-daughter duo. After torturing the boys, the duo were dropped at Bikarnakatte, she said.

She alleged that police had come in a car that belonged to Hameed, the husband of the deceased. She wanted to know why police used his car though the department had plenty of vehicles of its own.

The protesters also raised slogan against police.

A memorandum urging the immediate arrest of real culprit was submitted to Deputy Commissioner, City Police Commissioner and Inspector General of Police of Civil Rights Enforcement Cell.

Mangaluru, May 18: The coastal district of Dakshina Kannada today reported two more covid-19 positive cases. One is a 30-year-old man and the other is a 55-year-old woman.

The man, a resident of Karopady in Bantwal, had returned from Raigad in Maharashtra and is under quarantine.

The woman, a resident of Yeyyadi, had fever and hence visited Wenlock hospital for test. She was diagnosed to have Severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) symptoms and later tested positive. She has been shifted to ICU. 

With this the total number of covid-19 positive cases in the district rose to 54. Among them 48 are from Dakshina Kannada and six patients are from other districts.

Mangaluru, May 27: Mangaluru MLA U T Khader today urged Dakshina Kannada MP and Karnataka BJP chief Nalin Kumar Kateel to pave the way for immediate repatriation of Mangalureans stranded across Gulf countries.

The development comes amidst reports that lack of preparedness on part of the authorities concerned in Dakshina Kannada compelled the Centre to delay the operation of repatriation flights from various Gulf to Mangaluru International Airport under Vande Bharat Mission.

Lakhs of people from Mangaluru region (coastal Karnataka) alone are working in middle eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar. Thousands of them are currently stranded thanks to covid-19 lockdown and are helplessly waiting for repatriation.

Speaking to coastaldigest.com, Mr Khader said he already spoke to Mr Kateel and brought to his notice the plight of Mangalureans in Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries. "There are a large number of pregnant women, senior citizens and patients who need immediate repatriation. It is the responsibility of the elected representatives and district administration to pave the way for the repatriation of our people and arrange quarantine facilities for them," he said. 

"Mr Kaeel is not only MP of Dakshina Kannada. He is also the chief of Karnataka's ruling party. Hence, he must play a crucial role in facilitating the return of Kannadigas in general and Mangalureans in particular," Mr Khader said.

Bengaluru, Aug 6: No private hospital in Karnataka can turn away a patient without attending to him or her, irrespective of the Coronavirus status, an official has said.

"Private medical establishments shall not deny treatment and admission to any patient approaching the establishment irrespective of the fact that such patient may or may not be suffering from Covid-19," an official from the state Health and Family Welfare Department said on Wednesday.

Likewise, no private hospital can insist on a patient for a Covid-19 test report, said the official invoking the Disaster Management Act.

"The establishments also cannot insist for Covid test report," he said, directing all private hospitals to strictly abide by their responsibilities.

According to the department, it is the duty of every private hospital to provide first aid and take lifesaving steps when any patient approaches it.

"It is the duty of every private medical establishment to provide first aid and take lifesaving measures to stabilise the patient," he said.

The department also invoked statutes from Karnataka Medical Establishments Act 2017, under sections 11 and 11 (A) to drive home the message.

The directives assume significance at a time when several cases of private hospitals denying admissions and fleecing patients across the state have emerged.

"It has been noticed that some of the private hospitals are refusing treatment and admission to emergency patients, causing distress and this has resulted in complications, leading to death in certain cases," said the official.

The district authorities have been directed to take action on the erring hospitals as the department reiterated the responsibilities of private medical establishments.
