H1N1 cases in Udupi on the rise

Udupi, July 13: The H1N1 cases in Udupi are on the rise in the coast once again this year and two persons from the district out of 6 have died of H1N1 since the last two months. Speaking to Deccan Herald, DHO Dr Ramachandra Bairy informed that as many as 119 cases have been diagnosed till date at KMC Manipal, of which 32 have died since its detection in 2009, he added. In 2009, as many as 29 H1N1 cases were detected, of which one succumbed to death. In the year 2010, about 81 cases were diagnosed at KMC Manipal, of which 25 died due to H1N1.

In 2011, till date as many as 9 cases have been diagnosed in the district, of which 6 have succumbed to death. Of the 9 cases, three belong to Udupi district, he added. Briefing the measures taken to prevent this airborne influenza Bairy said that the health department has taken preventive measures against the spread of the disease and also to treat the patients with the symptoms. Out of the two persons, who died of H1N1 in the district, one was from within Manipur Primary Health Centre jurisdiction in Udupi taluk and other from Hebri.

Out of two people from the same family from Hebri who developed symptoms of swine flu, one has recovered, while the other succumbed, Bairy informed.

He said that the department has convened three meetings of doctors and others to alert them towards the H1N1scare, and educate them about the measures to be taken to prevent the spread of the disease and treatment of the patients. He said that the medicine Tami flu syrup and tablets are in sufficient quantity in the district and have been supplied to all the primary health centers. He also added that the chances of getting infection goes up when many people come together from outside the district for attending functions.

H1N1, the influenza that shook the entire world, attacked Udupi district in August 2009 with Manipal Institute of Technology student Balasubramanium being the first victim.

Balasubramanium was infected with the influenza during his tour to London.

Bengaluru, Jul 16: Eminent theatre personality and renowned vocalist Dr Subhadramma Mansur who had won many awards including the prestigious Karnataka Rajyotsava award died on Wednesday night, according to her family.

She was 81 and is survived by two sons and a daughter.

The family said she developed severe respiratory problems last night following which she was rushed to hospital, but died on the way.

Condoling her death, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said Dr Mansur had contributed to the theatre world for five decades. He also recalled her devotion to music as an eminent vocalist.

"I pray for her soul to rest in peace and strength to the family to bear the irreparable loss," the Chief Minister said in his message posted on Twitter.

The veteran theatre personality from Ballari earned recognition for her roles in mythology-based dramas.

Connoisseurs of stage performances recall her memorable portrayal of Draupadi, a character from the Mahabharata.

Her depiction of Hemareddy Mallamma left a deep imprint on the audience.

Many awards were bestowed on her including the Rajyotsava Award, Nataka Akademi and Gubbi Veeranna Award and an honorary doctorate by the Srikrishna Devaraya University

Mangaluru, Mar 25 : Taking into account surge of COVID-19  cases in neighbouring districts, Dakshina Kannada district administration has decided to suspend retail sales at Central Market in Mangaluru and public will not be allowed to purchase at Central Market from Thursday.

Proper arrangements have been made for the public to buy from nearby grocery shops from 6 am till 12 noon. 
However strict social distancing has to be ensured by the vendors failing which action will be taken, warned Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh. The public are advised to follow social distancing measures.

Manipal, Mar 12: Team WGSHA is proud to announce that the culinary museum in WGSHA has been listed in Limca Book of Records as India's First Living Culinary Arts Museum.

Limca Book of Records (LBR) is a catalogue of achievements made by Indians, at home and abroad in diverse fields of human endeavour. LBR is a celebration of exemplary exploits and recognizes accomplishments such as firsts, inventions, discoveries, honours, awards and the truly extraordinary.

Chef Thirugnanasambantham, Principal of WGSHA, while thanking MAHE and ITC Leadership for extending all support towards instituting this museum in Manipal and WGSHA, also appreciated and thanked all those who have directly or indirectly helped towards setting up this museum in Manipal.

"The process for WGSHA's culinary museum to make an entry into the popular Limca Book of Records started almost six months back and after validation by LBR recently, has been listed in the book of records. We are glad that we could be the first of its kind in such endeavour and we also hope to be in Guinness World Records soon", said Chef Thiru.

"We are indeed grateful to Michelin-starred Indian celebrity Chef Vikas Khanna, the founder and curator of this museum, who had this idea of establishing a culinary museum and donated thousands of kitchen tools and equipment worth millions of dollars to this museum for preserving the history of India's rich tradition of culinary arts and to educate the future generations. Chef Vikas Khanna, 'Distinguished Alumnus' of WGSHA, being very desirous of making such a museum in India, what better place it would be than in his own Alma Mater!", he said on the background of having the museum.

Chef Thiru mentioned that Udupi, popular for the famous 'Udupi Cuisine', and being a temple town, is adjacent to International University Town of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE).

MAHE is home to thousands of international students and visitors. With a great heritage of Udupi, combined with the large number of Indian and International students residing in and around Manipal, it was very apt for the college to create a museum for today's Indian youth and the International visitors to understand the rich culinary heritage of India, through the priceless kitchen tools and equipment donated by Chef Vikas Khanna.

"Has placed WGSHA in the global culinary map and we are proud to have joined all such efforts to preserve the history of cuisines and cultures across the world", said Chef Thiru.

The culinary art academic block housing the museum was opened in April 2018, spread approximately over 25,000 sq ft and is shaped in the form of a giant pot very similar to the ones found in Harappa.

There are historical as well as regular household items such as plates made by the Portuguese in India, a 100-year-old ladle used to dole out food at temples and bowls dating to the Harappan era, an old seed sprinkler, an ancient Kashmiri tea brewer known as 'samovar', vessels from the Konkan, Udupi and Chettinad regions, apart from a large collection of rolling pins, utensils of all shapes and sizes, tea strainers of different types etc.
