Communal harmony activists raise voice against imposing Gita

Mangalore, July 15: A few communal harmony activists under the banner of Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike on Friday evening staged a demonstration in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner here demanding the immediate withdrawal of controversial Bhagavad Gita Abhiyan in Schools.

The activists, who were less than 10 in number, shouted slogans against BJP led Karnataka Government and its Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Visveshwar Hegde Kageri, for “conspiracies against secularism”.

Addressing the fellow protesters, Ismath Pajeer said that the government's move to introduce compulsory teaching of a Hindu religious text to the students of primary and high schools across Karnataka is aimed at disturbing communal harmony and implementing saffron agenda.

The demonstrators also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, urging the government to stop the Bhagavad Gita Abhiyan with immediate effect and withdraw the cases filed against two of the SFI activists in Kolar, for protesting against the Abhiyaan. Suresh Bhat Bakrabial was among the protesters.

Bengaluru, Feb 26: The police remand of student activist Amulya Leona Noronha, who was produced before a Magistrate, after a no-show at the Metropolitan Magistrate Court, was extended by 10 more days.

The Fifth Additional Metropolitan Magistrate at the Magistrate's home on Tuesday night had remanded her to police custody for 10 days, less than the 14 days asked for by the Special Investigative Team, considering that she has already spent over four days in judicial custody.

Amulya Noronha, a student of NMKRV College for Women, had raised pro-Pakistan slogans by shouting ''Pakistan Zindabad'' at an anti-CAA protest in Bangalore on 20th February following which the city police filed a case of sedition against her.

Mangaluru, Jan 18: The Dakshina Kannada District Karavali Utsava Samiti has chosen senior Journalist and Assistant Editor on Udayavani Daily Manohar Prasad for the Karavali Gaurava Prashasti 2019-20.

The award will be presented to Manohar Prasad in recognition of his contribution in the field of Journalism.

He will be given the award during the valedictory of the Karavali Utsav at Panambur beach on January 19.

Mangaluru, Feb 18: Customs at International Airport here have seized Rs 58.95 lakh worth gold in two incidents and arrested two smugglers, Customs Commissionerate said on Monday.

According to the department, two men have been arrested by the customs officials in two separate incidents last evening for attempting to smuggle gold into the country valuing over Rs. 58.95 Lakhs.

In the first incident, Muhammed Swalih Chappathodi, 22, hailing from Malappuram, Kerala who arrived from Dubai by Spice jet flight concealed capsules containing gold in paste form inside his rectum which upon purification resulted in the recovery of 797 gm of 24 karats valued at Rs.32,35,820.
