ATS team in Bangalore and Bhatkal for Mumbai blast clues

Bangalore/Bhatkal, July 17: A team of officials of Mumbai's Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) on Sunday reached Bangalore in connection with the Mumbai serial blasts probe.


The team had visited Bhatkal in Uttar Kannada district on Saturday. Speaking in Bangalore on Sunday, Jyoti Prakash Mirji, the Bangalore commissioner, said the city police will cooperate with the team and help them with their investigation.


He alo said a team from the Bangalore police will also visit Mumbai in order to study the modus operandi of the operators and look for any similarity between the Mumbai blast and the balsts that had taken place in Bangalore last year.


Though officials did not confirm it, sources in the police department said one of the ATS teams, which is investigating the serial blasts case, visited Bhatkal.


Meanwhile, a senior police official said that since Indian Mujahideen (IM) is suspected to have carried out the blasts, the ATS team had visited Bhatkal town.


"As Bhatkal is the hometown of Riyaz Bhatkal and his brother Iqbal, founders of Indian Mujahideen, teams probing blast cases visit Bhatkal expecting crucial information about the planning and execution of blasts," he said.


However, the officer said the chances of a breakthrough in the investigation from the Bhatkal visit were very slim.


"Some of the suspects in Bhatkal are used to police investigation following blasts. They know that police will question them after any blast and hence they usually leave Bhatkal after the blasts. In most cases, investigation teams return empty handed," he said.


Meanwhile, the city police plan to visit Mumbai in the coming week. The team will examine all the scenes of the blasts and gather information about what substances were used in the bombs. They will tally them with material used in the bombs used in the 2008 serial blasts and Chinnaswamy Stadium blast in 2010 in Bangalore.


Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Alok Kumar explained, "We will share the information with Mumbai police. If there are similarities in the Mumbai blasts and those in Bangalore, we can work together since the outfit behind the blasts could be same."

Bengaluru, Aug 9: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has expressed condolences over the death of nodal officer who died while being on COVID-19 duty and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakhs to the family of the deceased.

The deceased has been identified as H Gangadharaiah. As per reports, he died due to a heart attack while on COVID-19 duty.

A government job and Rs 25 lakhs will be provided to the officer's family, according to Karnataka Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

"Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa expressed his heartfelt condolences over the death of H Gangadharaiah, KAS, who was on COVID-19 duty as nodal officer at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC)," Karnataka CMO tweeted.

"CM announced Rs 25 lakhs ex-gratia from Chief Minister's Relief Fund, a government job for a family member and instructed the last rites of Gangadharaiah to be performed with full state honours," the CMO added.

In the last 24 hours, 7,178 new COVID-19 cases (including 2665 in Bengaluru Urban), 93 deaths and 5,006 discharged cases were reported in Karnataka.

The total number of cases rises to 1,72,102 in the state, including 79,765 active cases, 89,238 discharges and 3,091 deaths, as per the State's Health Department.

Udupi, Jul 26: Two persons including a lady doctor have been arrested by the Kaup police in Udupi district for trying to use fake salary documents to avail loan from a bank to buy a car. 

According to police, on July 24, the doctor had visited Bank of Baroda's branch office at Kaup Moodabettu. She had approached the branch manager for a car loan for herself and her brother. She claimed that her monthly salary is Rs 2.66 lakh.

The bank verified the details furnished along with the loan application. The bank found that even though the doctor had furnished salary slips of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, she was presently not employed there.

The bank manager has filed a complaint at Kaup police station, accusing the doctor of trying to cheat the bank by availing loan on the basis of fake documents.

The police registered a case and nabbed her when she visited the Katapady branch of the same bank today. The police also arrested a man, who according to the doctor, created fake documents for her.
