Dept. of Applied Botany recognised as centre of excellence

Mangalore, July 21: The vision group on science and technology, departments of IT/BT, science and technology of state government has recognized department of applied botany of Mangalore University as centre of excellence to carry out studies on conservation and bio-prospecting of endemic and rare, endangered and threatened (RET) species. The ministry has sanctioned Rs 60 lakh to the department and cheque was handed over at a function held in Bangalore.


K R Chandrashekar, Chairman of the Department and Principal Investigator of the project, received the cheque from CM B S Yeddyurappa in a programme organized at Jawaharalal Nehru Centre for Advanced Studies and Research, Jakkur in Bangalore on July 6.

In the next three years, the department proposes to carry out studies on various aspects relating to germination, growth, flowering, fruit phenology of these important species and their conservation. The proposal was prepared and submitted under the guidance of T C Shivashankara Murthy, VC, who is a botanist.

Project is aimed at isolation and purification of phytochemicals and their pharmacological evaluation in lab conditions and also using test organisms. It is proposed to study structure of novel compounds using various techniques. Novel pharmacologically important compounds will be further taken up for patenting. The study is expected to throw light on the status of these rare species in the Western Ghats and their ecological and economical potential.

The department has been in the focus for the last two decades for its commitment in studies related to ecology, floristic analysis, enthobotanical explorations, structural studies, classification and identification of plants and conservation of RET species of plants,. Several endemic and RET species of the Western Ghats have been collected and planted in an arboretum established on the university campus is an area of about five hectares.



The study was expected to throw light on the status of rare plant species and their ecological and economical potential.

Kalaburagi, Feb 24: Former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Monday alleged that dissatisfaction and unhappiness are rising among the local Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs and the party might soon witness large scale defection.

Addressing the media, Mr. Siddaramaiah said many of the BJP MLAs have openly expressed their disappointment and unhappiness with the BJPs high command and also with Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa's attitude towards them and they have said that they want to join the Congress at the earliest.

Bengaluru, May 24: With 130 new cases, Karnataka's COVID-19 tally crossed the 2,000-mark on Sunday. Most new cases reported have interstate travel history with 97 coming from Maharashtra. The number of active cases in the state is 1,391 and the deaths reported so far is 42, including 2 for non-COVID reasons.

"Ninety seven of the 130 new patients are returnees from Maharashtra, the worst affected state in the country with 47,190 cases till Saturday," said a state health official. 

"The total number of COVID-19 cases across the state is 2,089, with 130 more testing positive in the past 18 hours," said the official.

Forty six patients were discharged from hospitals on Sunday taking the number of cured persons to 634. Of the 46 discharged, 18 are in Davanagere, 20 in Uttara Kannada, 4 in Chitradurga, 3 in Bagalakote and one in Haveri.

Of the 30 Karnataka districts, Chikkaballapura recorded the highest cases on Sunday at 27, followed by Yadgir (24), Udupi (23), Mandya (15) and Hassan (14).

Chikkaballapura is the home district of Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar, a doctor by profession, who is spearheading the fight against the pandemic.

On Saturday, the state's tally shot up to 1,959 due to 196 new cases, the highest single-day rise, with 195 of them crossing over from Maharashtra through the inter-state border, which was opened up as part of partial relaxation of the lockdown.  

The Karnataka government has imposed institutional quarantine on persons traveling in from outside the state, particularly by flight from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.

Bengaluru, Apr 4: Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday asked Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar to be the government's spokesperson on the Novel Coronavirus crisis management effort, a move that is being seen as keeping too many cooks from spoiling the broth.

At a high-level meeting to review measures on COVID-19 containment, Mr Yediyurappa is said to have taken exception to his Cabinet colleagues making multiple, and often contradictory statements, leading to confusion.

''The CM has directed Mr Kumar to be the only one to brief the media on COVID-19,'' a source from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) confirmed.
