DK, Udupi seen negative growth in population: Acharya

Mangalore, July 23: Minister for Higher Education Dr V S Acharya said that with the single child norm, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have seen negative growth in population and imbalance in sex ratio. The rate of growth of population is -25 in Udupi and -20 in Dakshina Kannada.

Speaking at the presentation of a study by Manipal University on the impact of mid-day meals on the school students organised by the Akshaya Patra Foundation here on Saturday, he stressed the need for two child norm. The sex ratio has come down to 968:1000 in Udupi district. The infant mortality rate in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi is much below the developed countries.

“Fresh, clean, tasty, nutritious and balanced food is essential for the growth of the children. If proper food is given to the children, then they will be attentive in classrooms,” he opined and added that the auditing of any programme is essential to know how much success we have achieved and to improve the programme for the good.

Study report

A team of doctors led by Manipal University department of Public Health Head Dr Ramachandra Kamath conducted a study to assess the nutritional status and health check up of 1,630 school children in Mangalore who consume food from Akshaya Patra Foundation in the form of mid-day meals.

Dr Kamath said each child was examined clinically for the presence of signs and symptoms of malnutriotion. A machine has been procured from Germany for the purpose. About 10 per cent of the schools covered in the first phase with 25 per cent school children for the study.

Similar study will also be carried out in Mysore, Hubli-Dharwad, and Bellary.

A total of 144 schools will be covered with 78,700 students. In Mangalore, 830 boys and 800 girls were taken for study. The study showed that 91.7 per cent of the children are normal. An average of 5 per cent malnutrition was noticed in the children.

The problems of anaemia, ear infection and skin infection were also noticed.

Dr Kamath said mid-day meals served under Akshaya Patra has well organised distribution and good in quality and quantity.

KSHEMA Head of the department of Ophthalmology Dr Jayaram Shetty said that all the children of 143 schools covered under AKshaya Patra will undergo free eye check up camp. Zilla Panchayat President K T Shailaja Bhat presided.

'Chapathis for mid-day meals'

The Akshaya Patra Foundation Director (Programme Coordinator) Ramaswamy Tarikere said that the Akshaya Patra is planning to supply chapathi to the kids for mid-day meals in Hubli-Dharwad, Bangalore and Bellary.

He said about 9 lakh chapathis would be required daily. “We will not make any restriction for the number of chapathis to be consumed. Once we get approval from the government, chapathis will be supplied to the students,” he added.

He said a sum of Rs 5.60 is spent on one child for mid-day meals. Of which, Rs 4.30 for high schools and Rs 2.69 for primary school kids is given by the government.

Bengaluru, Jun 17: The Congress on Wednesday decided to field senior party leader B K Hariprasad and incumbent Naseer Ahmed as candidates for the coming legislative council polls in Karnataka.

"The Congress President Sonia Gandhi has approved the proposal for the candidature of B K Hariprasad and Naseer Ahmed as Congress candidates to contest the biennial elections to the Legislative Council of Karnataka to be elected by the MLAs," the AICC said in a release.

The election is necessitated as the term of seven MLCs- Naseer Ahmed, Jayamma, M C Venugopal, N S Bose Raju, H M Revanna (all Congress), T A Sharavana (JDS) and independent D U Mallikarjuna- will end June 30.

Polling will be held on June 29 to fill seven MLC berths, and June 18 is the last date for filing of nominations.

While the BJP is in a position to win four out of seven seats, the Congress can win two and the JD(S) one.

Twenty-eight valid votes of MLAs are required for each candidate to win.

Hariprasad’s candidature has been announced as his tenure in the Rajya Sabha is coming to end on June 25.

He has also served as general secretary of the party.

Naseer Ahmed, who is retiring as MLC on June 30, will be seeking another term.

According to state Congress president D K Shivakumar, more than 200 aspirants have sought tickets for the two seats that the party can win in the legislative council polls.

Bengaluru, May 17: Karnataka Government on Sunday decided to appoint Administrative Committees, to over 6000 Panchayat Bodies, in the state, who’s five-year term would comes to an end this month.

Speaking to the media here, the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Minister, K S Eshwarappa informed that the state cabinet met recently had favored to appoint committees which would replace the elected bodies.

Informing that there is provision in the Panchayath Raj Act to appoint the committees, he said that the concerned Deputy Commissioners of the district, would appoint the members, to the committee, who were eligible to be nominated to the committees.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 20: One more person tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday, taking the total number of cases to 25, as the Left government announced a Rs 20,000 crore financial package to tide over the present crisis being faced by the southern state in the wake of the virus outbreak.

The multi-crore special package includes Rs 500 crore health package, Rs 2,000 crore loans and free ration.

The man who tested positive had returned from Dubai and hailed from the northern Kasaragod district, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told reporters after a COVID-19 review meeting.

He said 65 people were hospitalised on Thursday.

"At least 31,173 people are under surveillance, of whom 237 are in observation in hospitals across the state" he said.

Detailing the financial package, Vijayan said loans worth Rs 2,000 crore would be made available to needy families through all-women network 'Kudumbashree' during April-May.

Rural employment guarantee programmes worth Rs 1,000 crore each will be implemented in April-May, he said.

Social security pension of Rs 1,320 crore, to be given in April, would be distributed this month, he said, adding that 50 lakh people are benefited through the pension scheme.

Those belonging to the below poverty line (BPL) and Anthyodaya, who are not receiving social security pension, would be given Rs 1,000 each, for which Rs 100 crore would be earmarked.

Cutting across APL and BPL families, 10 kg free ration would be given and Rs 100 crore would be set apart for the purpose, he said.

A string of 1,000 low-cost hotels, providing food at Rs 20, would be opened across the state next month, the chief minister added.

The 'fitness' charges of autorickshaws and taxis and one month tax of stage and contract carriages would be waived, Vijayan said.
