Bishop lays foundation for diocesan scheme's 1st house

Mangalore, July 25: Mangalore diocesan Bishop Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza laid the foundation stone for a house at Batrakodi (in Kelarai parish near Neermarga) on Sunday, to be constructed as a part of the post centenary silver jubilee celebrations of Mangalore diocese. The house is first one among the 160 houses the diocese has planned to construct for the poor. There are 160 churches in Mangalore diocese and the diocese has has planned to construct one house in each parish, after selecting a beneficiary.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone, the Bishop hoped that all the 160 houses would be constructed at the earliest. While thanking the sponsors for providing monetary help to the poor, the Bishop appealed the members of the public to contribute generously for the cause. The 125th year celebratrations began on February 5, 2011 and would conclude on February 5, 2012.

Giving details about the housing project, Vicar General Msgr Denis Moras Prabhu said that as per the housing scheme for the poor, the diocese will provide Rs 50,000 while the parish concerned will provide an equal amont and the beneficiary will have to pay a sum of Rs 1 lakh. In case, if the beneficiary is unable to pay the amount, then any sponsor can help them. In this case, as the beneficiary Diana D'Souza could not afford to pay the amount, sponsors like businessman Willam D'Souza came forward to help the beneficiary.

Diana D'Souza's husband John D'Souza (42) passed away in Bahrain on May 27, 2011, due to cardiac arrest. The couple's sons - Joshwa aged 7 and Joyston aged 3, were also present. John had left for West Asia just two years ago.

Kelarai Parish Priest Fr John Vas said that the beneficiary (Diana D'Souza) was selected for the scheme by the parish council and the land for construction of house has been donated by Diana's in-laws.

Other schemes

Giving details about the other schemes as a part of 125 years celebrations, CODP?Director Fr Onil D'Souza said that the diocese is also planning to construct a hostel to accommodate about 100 poor students and also to construct a memorial at Bajpe to mark the silver jubilee of the papal visit to Mangalore.

Souza Group of Companies Partners Gilbert D'Souza and Wilfred D'Souza and Committee Secretary Susheel Noronha among others were present.

Bengaluru, May 27: Aimed at giving a boost to affordable housing, the Karnataka government on Tuesday decided to slash the stamp duty on new apartments costing up to ₹35 lakh.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to review the progress of the Stamps & Registration department.

The Chief Minister directed that the stamp duty be cut from the existing five per cent to two per cent on apartments costing less than ₹20 lakh, getting registered for the first time, his office said in a statement.

Further, the stamp duty on apartments costing between ₹21 lakh - ₹35 lakh will be down from five per cent to three per cent, it said. It is estimated that in 2020-21 due to COVID-19 induced lockdown, Stamps and Registration department might fall short of its revenue target by ₹3,524 crore. The revenue target for 2020-21 is ₹12,655 crore.

Kasaragod, Apr 1: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday announced a special action plan for Kasargod district where more people testing positive to the Coronovirous.

"The northern most district of the State has become the hot bed of Coronavirus infection with the maximum number of positive cases confirmed in Kerala," the Chief Minister told a press conference at the Government Secretariat.

“A special action plan will be implemented in Kasargod. Currently, Kasargod district has the maximum number of positive cases and also the highest number of people under hospital observation. Data from the panchayats in the district will be used to test people with symptoms and also to identify people in contact with them," he said.

Bengaluru, Mar 13: Senior IPS officer KSR Charan Reddy, who was the Additional Director General of Police in Criminal Investigation Department, Karnataka passed away in Bengaluru on Friday after prolonged illness. 

He was reportedly battling cancer for at least three years now and had suffered multiple recurs after treatment. 

"Shri Charan Reddy, IPS, ADGP, Karnataka State, passed away this morning, after a prolonged illness. He was one of our finest officers. Always stood tall and held his head high!! May his soul rest in peace," Retired IPS officer and former Director General of Police (Fire Services) MN Reddi tweeted. 

IPS officer Charan Reddy was heading the Special Investigation Team of the Lokayukta when he arrested Vijayanagara MLA Anand Singh in 2015 for illegally transporting iron ore out of Ballari. The illegal mining scam had rocked the former BJP government in 2011.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa condoled his death and said that he was an honest officer in the state. "Charan Reddy was a dedicated and honest officer. I pray that his soul rests in peace. I pray that god gives his family the strength to go through such a turbulent time after his departure," BS Yediyurappa tweeted. 

A 1993-batch IPS officer, Charan Reddy KSR is originally from Chittoor and has served under various departments of the state's police force. He was serving as the Inspector General of Police in Belagavi division in 2013, when he was transferred to Bengaluru as the IGP (Training). In 2014, he was posted as the IGP of the SIT probing the illegal mining scam in which former Tourism Minister Gali Janardhana Reddy is also allegedly involved.

He was transferred out of the SIT in Lokayukta in 2016 and posted as Additional Commissioner of Police (law and order) in Bengaluru. He served as the ADGP of Crime in Mangaluru in 2018 and was later appointed as the Additional Director General of Police (training) the same year. In 2019, he was transferred and appointed as the ADGP of CID.
