Students pledge to save country from corruption

Mangalore, July 27: Hundreds of students on Wednesday took out a rally in the city as part of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad's nationwide protest against 'corruption'.

Mangalore was one among the 500 district centres of the country, where the right-wing students' movement staged mammoth demonstration raising voice against, what the protesters said, the uncontrolled corruptions of Congress led Union Government of India.


The rally of saffron clad boys and girls from various education institutions, commenced at Jyoti Circle in the heart of the city and culminated in the Town Hall.

Addressing the overwhelming crowd of the students in Town Hall, Vasanth Kumar, State President, ABVP, said that the country's independence is in danger due to the rampant corruption and corrupt policies of the rulers of India.

Lashing out at the Centre's inability to check the scandals, he pointed out that three among the scandals of Central Government have crossed worth Rs 1 lakh crores each while 13 scandals have crossed worth Rs 1000 crores each.

Appreciating the enthusiasm of the students and their concern towards the motherland, he said that ABVP's nationwide protest aims at protecting the nation, which is engulfed by corruption.

He called upon the young generation to exhibit its strength and work towards a developed nation.

Commenting on 2G scam, which is the largest reported scam to rock the nation, he said that even Prime Minister and Home Minister of the country have involved in this scandal.

The demands of the agitating students included bringing the black money deposited in several banks across the world back to the nation, to enact the Jan Lokpal Bill, electoral reforms and transparency in the government by e-Governance.

RSS leader and businessman Pushparaj Jain presided over the protest meet. ABVP leaders Jagadish Kaapumale, Dasharath Vylai, Akshatha and Swathi were also present.

Mangaluru, Jan 22: Mangaluru Commissioner of Police PS Harsha said that Aditya Rao, who surrendered before Bengaluru Police after planting an improvised explosive device (IED) at the Mangaluru International Airport, is now in their custody.

"Our Investigation team arrested Aditya Rao in Bengaluru in connection with planting of an explosive device at Mangaluru Airport on January 20. We produced the accused before Bengaluru first JMFC court and court issued transit warrant," said Harsha.

"We have brought him to Mangaluru from Bengaluru, now the accused is in our custody, our investigation team will interrogate him. We will investigate all aspects. He will be produced before Mangaluru 6th JMFC Court," he added.

Rao hails from Udupi and has engineering and MBA degrees.

According to the police, the IED was recovered from a bag at Mangaluru airport on January 20. It was later defused in an open field by the personnel of the bomb disposal squad.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Karnataka on Tuesday reported its biggest single-day spike of 6,259 Covid-19 cases and 110 fresh deaths, taking the total infection count to 1,45,830 and the toll to 2,704, the health department said.

The day also saw a record 6,777 patients getting discharged after recovery, outnumbering the fresh cases. Out of 6,259 fresh cases, a total of 2,035 cases were from Bengaluru Urban district. The previous biggest single-day record was on July 30 when the state added 6,128 cases.

A bulletin from the department said cumulatively 1,45,830 Covid-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state and it included 2,704 deaths and 69,272 discharges. Out of the 73,846 active cases, as many as 73,212 patients were stable in isolation at designated hospitals while 634 in the intensive care units.

Among the fresh deaths, Bengaluru Urban accounted for 30 followed by Dakshina Kannada (13) and Mysuru (9).

Most of the people who succumbed either had a history of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) or Influenza-like illness (ILI), the bulletin said. Besides Bengaluru Urban, the other districts which reported higher fresh cases on Tuesday are Mysuru 662, Kalaburagi 285, Ballari 284, Belagavi 263, Dakshina Kannada 225, Davangere 191, Dharwad and Hassan 188. Bengaluru Urban district continued to top the list of positive cases with a total of 63,033 infections, followed by Ballari 7,638 and Dakshina Kannada 6,388.

Among discharges too Bengaluru Urban tops the districts with 27,877 discharges, followed by Ballari 3,724 and Kalaburagi 3,470. A total of 14,89,016 samples had been tested so far, out of which 42,458 on Tuesday with 29,488 being rapid antigen tests.

Hubballi, June 8: If everything goes as expected, the railway station in Hubballi, the commercial capital of the state and also the headquarters of South Western Railway (SWR), will have the world’s longest railway platform next year.

E Vijaya, chief public relation officer of SWR, said the work is being done as part of doubling between Hubballi and Bengaluru. 

“At present, Hubballi has five platforms, and the number will be increased to eight. Inspection carriage line is getting converted to full platform. 

Platform No. 1 will be extended from 550m to 1,400m with 10m width. At present, Gorakhpur’s 1,366m platform is the world’s longest facility,” the officer said.

She added that one more entry point is coming up at Gadag Road. “Rs 90 crore is being spent on the works related to full yard, signalling, electrical and building. 

The works, started in November 2019, will be completed in the next one year,” said Vijaya.
