Bahrain to host World Kannada Cultural Convention

Mangalore, August 3: Bahrain is all set to host the two-day 8th World Kannada Cultural Convention 2011 for the second time from September 29. Organized by Kannada Sangha Bahrain and city-based Hrudayavahini monthly, the convention aims to bring children of Non-Resident Indian Kannadigas outside India closer to their language, literature and culture and provide platform for local artists to mingle with their counterparts settled in Bahrain.

The convention will be marked by kavighosti, hasya ghosti, madhyama ghosti, non-resident-Kannadiga ghosti and other cultural programmes such as bharathanatyam, dance drama, Yakshagana and music. Raj Kumar, president of Kannada Sangha, told reporters here on Tuesday that a performance by Sandalwood actors including Puneeth Raj Kumar will mark the finale of the two-day programme.

Senior politicians from Karnataka including the Union minister for external affairs S M Krishna are expected to attend the inaugural function on September 29. The Sangha has a history of 35 years and there are nearly 25,000 Kannadigas in Bahrain, he explained.

The highlight of the event will be an exhibition that focuses on education, housing and health. The person who will chair the convention will be selected in the third week of August. The organisers, as is the norm, will honour 14 persons, including 7 Horanadu and Non-Resident Kannadigas and equal number of achievers from Karnataka. Mangaluru, Feb 2: A video of a woman rescuing a dog from a well in Mangaluru has gone viral on social media. The dog fell inside the well accidentally and the woman rushed to the spot to rescue it. The two minute seven second video has been shared on Twitter by a user, Mauna, and has ever since been viewed over 15,000 times.

The woman climbed down the well as other people attached a rope to her body during the rescue mission. Another rope was then thrown to her and she tied it around the dog after which it was pulled outside. The woman, thereafter, climbed outside the well with much difficulty.

"Bless the lady who saved the Dog," the user captioned the post.

Mangaluru, Jan 14: Ace Yakshagana guru Kadri Ramachandra Bhat Yelluru will be awarded the ‘Kundeshwara Samman’ award by Shri Kundeshwara Kshetra, Hirgana, Karkala taluk.

The award will be presented to him in a ceremony on January 21.

“A Yakshagana, ‘Bhargava Vijaya’, with Yakshadhruva Patla Sateesh Shetty will be held on the same day. A Tulu drama, ‘Panoditthundu’, will be staged by Sindhura team. The annual temple festival will be held on January 22,” a press release issued by Cultural Programme Convenor Jitendra Kundeshwara said here on Tuesday.

Mangaluru, May 21: A man who was quarantined in Moodbidri town of Dakshina Kannada after returning from Mumbai has reportedly committed suicide under mysterious circumstances.

The victim has been identified as Dayanand Poojary from Kadandale.

The exact reason for the suicide is not yet known. However, it is suspected that he might have resorted to the extreme step out of fear about COVID-19 and about the means of his future livelihood.

He was admitted to the quarantine facility at Kadandale school around 1 am on Thursday, May 21. Within a couple of hours he ended his life, sources said.

A case has been registered and investigations are on.
