Seminar on 'Trees – Caretakers of the Planet' held

Mangalore, August 5: A one day seminar on 'Trees – Caretakers of the Planet' was organised by the Department of Botany and Nature Club, St. Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangalore on Friday.

Inaugurating the programme, Prof. K R Chandrashekar, Chairman, Department of Applied Botany, Mangalore University, outlined the importance of trees for the survival of life on planet Earth. “It is hard to imagine a day without plants. We won't be able to survive without Oxygen”, he reminded.

Mentioning the declaration of 2011 as the International Year of Forests by the United Nations, he stressed the importance of preserving trees for a sustainable environment.

Dr. M Prem D'Souza A C, Principal, St. Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangalore, Dr. Noeline J Pinto, Convenor, St. Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangalore were also present.

Mangaluru, Apr 22: Dakshina Karnataka District in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary on Wednesday warned of invoking Goonda Act against those who attack doctors, police or ASHA workers who are involved in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Addressing a function arranged to distribute food kits to journalists on behalf of SCDCC Bank at the Patrika Bhavan on Wednesday, the Minister said the authorities have been instructed to initiate action without any hesitation against anyone who tries to attack Corona warriors.

It has been observed across the state the incidents of attack and assault on ASHA workers, police and civic workers are increasing hence it was felt the need for severe actions against such elements , he added.

New Delhi, Jun 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday sought a discussion on advances in telemedicine, the use of "Make in India" products in the healthcare, and the use of IT tools in the medical sector for a healthier society.

Addressing an event at the Rajiv Gandhi Health University in Bengaluru via video conference, he sought a discussion on whether new models can be conceived that make telemedicine popular on a larger scale.

Referring to the "Make in India" program, he said the initial gains made in this field make him optimistic. "Our domestic manufacturers have started production of personal protective equipment and have supplied about one crore PPEs to those in the frontline of fighting COVID-19.

Modi said IT-related tools for healthier societies can be of great help.

"I am sure you have heard of Arogya Setu. Twelve crore health-conscious people have downloaded it. This has been very helpful in the fight against coronavirus," he said.

Bengaluru, Mar 29: Seven new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Karnataka since Saturday 5 pm to 2 pm on Sunday.

The total number of positive cases in the state stands at 83, out of which five have been cured/discharged and three have lost their lives, according to the Karnataka Health Department.

A total of 979 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India, informed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday.
