19 year old Arabic College teacher crushed to death by train

Kasaragod, August 6: A young teacher of an Islamic Institution was crushed to death by a speeding train at Trikaripur near here, while trying to cross the tracks in heavy rains.

The victim has been identified as Raihana (19), daughter of K Abdullah, who is the Khateeb of Pekkod Masjid. Raihana had bagged the teaching job at Chervathur Arabic College only a week ago.

The accident took place at around 8:45 am on Friday, when she was in a hurry to catch the bus at a bus stop, situated on the other side of railway tracks. She was supposed to reach college by 9:30.

It is said that Raihana started crossing the tracks after Kannur-Mangalore passenger train just moved away. However, the speeding Egmore Express which immediately came on the adjacent track knocked down her. Raihana failed to notice the oncoming train due to heavy rains.

The body has been handed over to the victim's family after conducting post mortem at a local hospital.

Bengalur, May 15: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Dr CN Ashwath Narayan on Friday said that stern action will be taken against the persons responsible for organising the village temple fair in Ramanagara district.

"Stern action will be taken against the person responsible for organising the festival. This should not have happened," the Deputy CM said.

Flouting all social distancing norms, people had gathered in large numbers for a temple fair in Kolagondanahalli village of Ramanagara. People were even not wearing masks.

They had taken permission for gathering from Panchayat Development Officer NC Kalmatt.

Kalmatt has been suspended by Ramanagara Deputy Commissioner following a report by the Tehsildar.

Meanwhile, 45 more COVID-19 cases have been reported from Karnataka, taking the total number of coronavirus cases in the state to 1,032 on Friday, according to the state Health Department.

Mangaluru, Feb 13: Jnandev Kamath, former President of erstwhile Mangalore Stock Exchange Limited died late last night in a private hospital in the city.

He was 65 and is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Jnandev Kamath was an alumnus of SDM College of Law and Business Management. 

He was one the founding members of Mangalore Stock Exchange Limited. He was an avid sportsman, an accomplished cricketer, a champion rallyist and golf coach. 

He often played for Pentlandpet Sports Association (PPSA) in his younger days.

New Delhi, Feb 13: Ashoka Buildcon on Thursday said it has emerged as the lower bidder for a highway project worth Rs 1,035.5 crore in Karnataka.

The project entails four laning of a section of NH-206 in the state.

Ashoka Buildcon had submitted its bid to National Highways Authority of India for the project to be built on hybrid annuity mode under Bharatmala Pariyojana, it said in a BSE filing.

"The company emerged as the lowest bidder at the financial bid opening meeting held on February 13," Ashoka Buildcon said.

The quoted bid project cost for the project is Rs 1,035.50 crore, it added.

The company's stock was trading at Rs 103.05, down 2.78 per cent, on the BSE.
