Southern Railways express helplessness at train delays

Mangalore, August 7: Southern Railway officials expressed their helplessness with regard to the late running of trains during the monsoon.

Southern Railway Palghat divisional manager S K Raina said that it is very difficult to run trains on time due to the frequent landslides on the Konkan railway stretch during the monsoon. Souther Railways cannot take any measures on its own as the stretch come under the Konkan Railways. Hence, we are maintaining two separate schedules for monsoon and other season, he added.

On proposals of road under bridge across railway level crossing at Jeppu-Kudpady in the city, Raina said that Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) will have to deposit two percent of the estimate amount as an initial deposit under the cost sharing agreement. However, the MCC has not deposited money with the railways, he said adding that the railways will prepare plan once the MCC deposit the money.

Further, he said that two more Jan Sadharan Ticket Booking Sevak (JTBS) ticket booking counters will come up near Mangalore Central railway station soon. The new railway bridge across Nethravathi River will be ready for inauguration by December, 2011, he added.

Bengaluru, Jul 29: State officials will conduct Common Entrance Test (CET) exam as per the instructions given by the state high court, said Karnataka deputy chief minister CN Ashwathnarayan on Tuesday.

"Officials have informed that they are all set to conduct exams on July 30 and 31. We will put this matter in front of the high court. As per the instructions of the high court, we will move forward," said Ashwathnarayan.

This comes after Karnataka High court asked the state government to reconsider the decision of conducting the CET exam.

"...I had called an emergency meeting with district collectors, officials of education, transport, health, police department. And, I took information about the preparedness for conducting the CET exam," he added.

Karnataka CET Exam is a state-level entrance exam organised for providing admissions in Engineering, Pharmacy, B Pharma and other courses offered by colleges and institutions located in the state.

Mangaluru, May 7: Thousands of migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, led by Congress leader Mithun Rai, staged a protest here on Wednesday demanding that they be allowed to return to their native places.

The workers started a protest demonstration opposite Mangaluru City Corporation office in the city. Police dispersed the crowd for violating social distancing norms.

The workers said they have nowhere to go and nothing to eat. Therefore, they are demanding to be sent back to their states. They however, had crowded together without following the social distance norm. 

In the wake of protest, prohibitory orders under section 144(3) were imposed in Dakshina Kannada district between 7pm and 7 am till May 17 to check the spread of Covid-19.

Bengaluru, Jan 24: After the visit of fact finding committee members to the spot, the Christian community here decided to submit a report to the state government urging to install a 114-ft. statue of Jesus Christ at Kapala Betta in Kanakapura taluk of Ramanagaram district, Congress MLC Ivan D’souza said here on Thursday.

While talking to media, Mr D’souza said the committee would submit the report to Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and Revenue Minster R. Ashok and urge the government to construct the statue at the earliest.

The RSS and other BJP outfits have strongly opposed the installation, following which the government ordered suspension of the work. A few days ago, Kalladka Prabhakar, RSS ideologue, took out a rally in Kanakapura opposing the installation.
