Rev. Fr. Francis Thomas Baretto dies at 55

Mangalore, August 9: Rev. Fr. Francis Thomas Baretto OCD, aged 55, who was serving in Austria, belonging to the Karnataka Goa Province, breathed his last at 4. 50am on August 6.

He was from Nirkan, Mangalore.

He was born on May 15, 1956. After his preliminary education, he joined Carmel. He made his First Religious Profession on February 11, 1979. Later he received the Order of Priesthood on April 29, 1986. He has served the communities of Mira Road, Mangalore and Belur in India and later he was transferred to Austria and served that particular community for many years.

He was seriously ill for the last couple of days.

Vikash Kumar takes over as Mangaluru police chief

Mangaluru, Jun 29: Senior IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash today took over as the new commissioner of police of Mangaluru city.

He replaced Dr P S Harsha, who was recently transferred and posted as the Deputy Inspector General and Commissioner of Information and Public Relations.

Before coming to Mangaluru as city police chief, Vikash Kumar was the Deputy Inspector General of Police and Commander of Anti Naxal Force.

He had also served as the superintendent of police of Chikkamagaluru district.

Fishing ban in coastal belt of Karnataka for 2 months from June 1

Mangaluru, May 20: Karnataka Government has banned fishing through mechanised and traditional boats using inboard or outboard engines of over 10 HP capacity using nets or other means, officials sources said on Wednesday.

As per the notification issued under the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act 1986, all fishing activities were banned from June One to July 31.

However, the ban is not applicable for fishing through traditional and country boats which use engines of less than 10 HP capacity, according to a release issued here on Wednesday.

Vidya Dinker, Naveenchandra to participate in national level consultation on Urban Governance

Mangalore, Jan 21: Former city councillor and social activists Naveenchandra and social activist Vidya Dinker have been invited to participate in two-day National Level Consultation on Urban Governance which will take place on January 22 and 23 at Juniper Hall, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

Urban governance stakeholders of 20 states and one union territory will be participating in this national level consultative seminar. The participants will include elected representatives, NGO representatives and urban planning experts. The seminar is being organised by Mumbai based Prajna Foundation, which has undertaken an in-depth study of the governance of the 20 states and one union territories.

Having served several terms as a corporator of Mangaluru City Corporation, Naveenchandra is knowledgeable in matters relating to urban governance. He is very popular in his constituency. Vidya Dinker is a well known city based social activist. She is the Coordinator, Citizens Forum for Mangalore Development.

Vidya Dinker I can understand but Naveen i don't know on what qualifications and credentials he has been selected and to say he is Popular in his constituency is a Misnormer . Just visit kambla ward once and speak to people and you can understand it better !!!
