Mangalore, August 10: The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee on Wednesday urged the Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner to stop the eviction drive by the district administration targeting poor families at Kasba-Bengre.

The houses belonging to Haseena, wife of Moideen, Badrunnisa, wife of Abdul Rehman, Hafsa, wife of Musthafa, Kunhimonu, Rizwan and Mohammed Rafiq were demolished on August 6 amidst tight police security.

The congress delegation led by Ivan D'Souza, Secretary of KPCC, met Additional Deputy Commissioner K T Viroopakshappa in the morning and urged the district administration to take appropriate measures to immediately issue the title deeds for the residents of the area.

Submitting memorandum addressed to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr D'Souza said that it is not appropriate to demolish the houses where 95% of people belong to Below Poverty Line.

The delegation demanded district administration should build house, in the same place where it demolished houses last week and allow the poor families to lead life peacefully.

He said it is responsibility of district administration to construct shelter for those homeless people. If the administration failed to do so, the congress will stage protest, he warned.

Imtiyaz, a victim who lost a house said “We were living in Kasba Bengre for the last 25 years with my mother Nebisa, six children, my aunt and her four children. We were living in a small hut till recently. We started the construction of the house one and half years ago. The house was nearing completion. In spite of appeal, the officials did not leave the house from demolishing.”

He said “We are ready to go to the jail if our family gets a roof over the head. I had applied for title deeds. I have ration card. However, the officials acted mercilessly.”

Mangalore City Corporation former member Farooq said “Almost all the houses in Kasaba Bengre, Thota Bengre, Kudroli Bengre, Bokkapattana Bengre are illegal. Why the officials evicted only six houses. There are several big bungalows violating the CRZ on the sea shore. Why are they not evicted?” he asked.

Former Mayor K Ashraf, Corporators Nagendra, Shashidhara Hegde, T K Sudhir and others were present.

Bengaluru, Jun 29: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah along with Congress leaders on Monday rode a bicycle from his residence to Minsk Square to protest against the hike in fuel prices.

KPCC President DK Shivakumar was also seen riding a bicycle along with other members of the Congress party to Minsk Square where the party staged the protest.

During the protest, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar along with party leaders carried a bike on their shoulders.

"We are carrying out our duty today. At the time of the UPA government's rule, when there was any hike in fuel prices, several BJP leaders had made bold statements. It is ironic that today, at the time of this COVID-19 pandemic, even despite the price of barrels falling, they have increased fuel prices," said Shivakumar.

"In Delhi, diesel prices have exceeded petrol prices. We must protest against this. The DCP can file whatever case he wants to. Despite several cases against us, we have never been shaken up. They are inconveniencing people and causing the people to burn in hell. These people must be protected," he added.

With the hike in fuel prices, the petrol prices stand at Rs 83.04/litre (increase by Rs 0.05), and the diesel prices stand at Rs 76.58/litre (increase by Rs 0.13) in Bengaluru, according to a price notification of state oil marketing companies.

The Congress has termed the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel as "unjust" and "thoughtless", and urged the Central government to roll back the increase with immediate effect and pass on the benefit of low oil prices directly to the people.
